Camping near Franklin Grove, Illinois
Franklin Grove sits in Lee County in northwest Illinois, along the historic Lincoln Highway and a short drive east of Dixon. The village of roughly 900 residents functions as a quiet base for RV travelers exploring the Rock River corridor, with several state parks and private campgrounds within a 20-mile radius.
The closest public land is Franklin Creek State Natural Area, an 882-acre preserve managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Its campground, Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian, is restricted to horse campers and does not accept general public RV camping. Travelers without horses typically stay at nearby private resorts and route day trips through the natural area.
Within easy driving distance, private options include Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: O'Connell's in Amboy, Mendota Hills Campground south of Amboy, Green River Oaks Resort, and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground. Together these cover the range from family resort camping with pools and activities to smaller ranch-style RV parks.
Things to do near Franklin Grove
Franklin Creek State Natural Area anchors the local outdoor scene, with hardwood forests, bedrock outcroppings, natural springs, and Franklin Creek flowing through the preserve. A reconstructed grist mill operates as a visitor center on weekends. Trails support hiking, fishing, and seasonal cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, and the equestrian trail system covers about 12 miles, developed and managed by the Rock River Trail and Horseman's Association.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: O'Connell's have access to three heated pools, waterslides, an arcade, wagon rides, and a themed activity program. Mendota Hills Campground offers four small lakes, kayak, canoe and rowboat rentals, a swimming beach, and hayrack rides.
Off-site, nearby draws include Castle Rock State Park, White Pines Forest State Park, Lowden State Park along the Rock River, Nachusa Grasslands, and Dixon, the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan.

The Franklin Grove area has a humid continental climate with a wide seasonal swing. Winters are cold and snowy, summers are warm and the wettest part of the year, and shoulder seasons are variable. Private campgrounds in the region generally operate on a warm-weather season; Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: O'Connell's, for example, runs April through October, and most other private parks follow a similar spring-to-fall calendar.
Spring brings rising temperatures, wildflowers in the natural area's ravines and prairie remnants, and higher-flow conditions in Franklin Creek. Muddy conditions after heavy spring rains can lead to temporary horse trail closures at Franklin Creek State Natural Area.
Summer is peak family season, with pools and lakes at private resorts fully in use and weekends filling early. Fall delivers oak, hickory, and maple color through the hardwoods, though trails and day-use areas at Franklin Creek can close intermittently during firearm deer seasons in late fall and early winter. Horse trails are closed over winter.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

Josh was fantastic; I appreciate him staying for an hour and showing me around the RV since it was my first time. The RV was exactly as described, and we enjoyed our first family camping trip in it.

We had an excellent experience in Josh’s camper. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with and kept in Prompt communication. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with. The camper was delivered as promised and picked up on time. The camper was as advertised with all the creature comforts of home. We will definitely be looking for Josh’s trailer through RVezy for the Labor Day camping trip next year. 10 out of 10!

Booking and reservations
Reservation rules vary sharply between public and private sites. The Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian campground is limited to horse campers, with primitive overnight sites and permanent tie lines; the broader Franklin Creek reservable facilities such as shelters are handled through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reservation system.
Private parks handle bookings on their own platforms. Mendota Hills Campground opens each season by email in early March, with online bookings following a few days later, and requires a nonrefundable deposit. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: O'Connell's books through its parent RV On The Go network. Green River Oaks Resort and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground take reservations directly through their own websites and offices.
For summer weekends, holidays, and themed weekends at family resorts, reserve well in advance.
What to expect
Expect a mix of primitive public camping and full-service private resorts. Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian offers vault toilets, scattered water hydrants, and a dump station, but no showers, no electrical hookups, and camping restricted to horse users. Access is via Old Mill Road off IL Route 38 on the west side of Franklin Grove.
Private parks in the area typically offer 20, 30, and 50 amp hookups, water and sewer, camp stores, playgrounds, and cabin or trailer rentals. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: O'Connell's is a large resort with hundreds of sites, three heated pools, two waterslides, and organized activities. Mendota Hills Campground spans 130 acres with a strong seasonal-camper community.
Cell and Wi-Fi coverage can be uneven in the wooded river country, and interior campground roads may soften after heavy rain. Big rigs are accommodated at most private parks; verify site length before booking.
