Campgrounds and RV parks near Fulton, IL

The Mississippi River defines most activities in the area. Boat launches, fishing access, and paddling on backwater sloughs are available at Spring Lake Campground and Camp Hauberg, both of which sit directly on the river system. The Great River Trail runs through Spring Lake Campground and continues toward Savanna and the Quad Cities, giving cyclists a paved, mostly flat route along the water. Hiking is concentrated at Mississippi Palisades State Park, where about 15 miles of trails climb limestone bluffs to overlooks such as Lookout Point, Twin Sisters, and Indian Head. Fulton itself is known for its working Dutch windmill, De Immigrant, and a riverfront levee walk. Timber Lake Resort adds inland amenities suited to families with kids.

The camping season in this part of Illinois generally runs from mid-April through late October. Most private parks open around the start of April and close after the last weekend of October. Mississippi Palisades State Park runs its main camping season from spring through fall, with reduced facilities outside that window. Spring is green and often wet, with high water on the Mississippi in April and May. Gnats and mosquitoes tend to be worst in the low-lying river areas in late spring and early summer. Summer brings warm, humid days, active river traffic, and the busiest reservation window. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill early at both the state park and private campgrounds. Fall is a popular time for the bluffs at the Palisades, with peak hardwood colour typically in early to mid October. Boat traffic on Spring Lake closes each year on October 1 to provide a refuge for migrating waterfowl during hunting season.

Sites along the river corridor share a few common features. Active rail lines run parallel to Route 84, so campgrounds close to the tracks, including Spring Lake Campground and Camp Hauberg, hear passing freight trains at night. Most riverfront sites are level, grassy or gravel, and shaded by mature hardwoods. Hookups vary. Camp Hauberg offers 30-amp electric with water at the site and a shared dump station rather than full sewer. Timber Lake Resort and Seven Eagles Resort provide full-hookup pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. Mississippi Palisades has electric and non-electric loops, with shared water spigots, central shower buildings, and a sanitary dump station. Cell coverage is generally usable but patchy in the bluffs and on the river side of the highway. Bring insect repellent from May through August.
