Campgrounds and RV parks near Galva, IL

Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area anchors most trips. The park covers 1,365 acres and offers 3.7 miles of trails ranging from easy to moderate through rolling prairie, pine plantations, and bottomland hardwood forests. Johnson Lake covers 58 acres and holds largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and bullhead, and only electric trolling motors are permitted on the lake. The historic Ryan's Round Barn on the property is open seasonally for tours from May through October. The Hennepin Canal State Trail is the other regional draw. The trail stretches for 93 miles along an old canal towpath and offers fishing, boating, and camping across a 104-mile linear parkway, popular with cyclists, paddlers, and anglers. Winter visitors use the same parks for ice fishing and cross-country skiing, and the canal towpath hosts 91 miles of snowmobile trail, the longest in the state.

The prime RV season in this part of Illinois runs from late spring through early fall. At Johnson-Sauk Trail, the shower building, sanitary dump station, and all water are open May 1 and close November 1; the park does not provide water from November 1 to May 1, though the campground stays open during winter months for electric or non-electric dry camping. ExploreMoreIL reservations are available for the Chief Keokuk Campground, Chief Tecumseh cabin, and Black Hawk Group Camp from May 1 through October 31, and the primitive cabin is available year round. Hunting seasons affect access in fall. Johnson-Sauk Trail is a controlled pheasant hunting site with pheasants released during the statewide season, so plan around late-fall dates carefully and check the park office for closures. Along the Hennepin Canal, water is scarce along the route, found only at the visitor center (with periodic outages reported at Locks 21 and 22), and equestrian use is allowed between April 15 and October 31. Spring brings the wettest stretch, and mud on unpaved access roads can be an issue after storms.

Expect a rural, agricultural landscape with quiet county roads, small towns, and easy driving for larger rigs. At Johnson-Sauk Trail, the Chief Keokuk Campground has 70 pads with electrical hookups (Class A) plus 25 non-electric tent-only sites (Class C); each site has a parking spur, table, fire ring, and grill, with water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, and a dump station on site seasonally. Cell service is fair in the area. Hennepin Canal sites are stripped down. Outdoor toilets sit at Locks 3, 6, 11, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 26, at Bridges 14, 15, and 23, and at the visitor center, but there are no hookups, showers, or dump stations along the canal. Bring drinking water, keep kids clear of unguarded lock edges, and note that some GPS routes suggest dirt farm roads that flood after rain, so stick to paved county routes when approaching primitive sites.
