Campgrounds near Gillespie, Illinois
Gillespie sits in Macoupin County in west-central Illinois, roughly halfway between Springfield and the St. Louis metro and within easy reach of Interstate 55 and historic Route 66. The area is rural and rolling, with oak-hickory woodlands, farmland, and small lakes that anchor most of the camping options. RV travelers have a mix of state-park and private-park choices, all within about a 30-minute drive.
Beaver Dam State Park, southwest of Carlinville, is the main public option and the closest state-managed campground. It sits on a 750-acre tract in an oak-hickory woodland, centered on a small lake stocked for fishing. Private parks cluster around Litchfield, just off I-55. Lazy Days Campground and Country Bend Campground both cater to families and longer-stay RVers, while Rustic Acres Campgrounds and Kamper Kompanion RV Park offer smaller, quieter setups closer to Gillespie itself. Together, the area covers everything from primitive tent sites to full-hookup pull-throughs and cabin rentals.
Things to do near Gillespie
Most trips here center on water, trails, and Route 66. At Beaver Dam State Park, the lake supports fishing for bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, with a boat launch and fish-cleaning station on site. The park also has hiking trails, an archery range, and a playground, and cross-country skiing is popular when snow holds. Country Bend Campground adds family-oriented extras like a swimming pool, jumping pillow, eighteen-hole putt-putt, four fishing ponds, and pedal boats. Lazy Days Campground has two ponds for swimming and fishing plus a basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a camp store. Off-site, Litchfield offers the Litchfield Skyview Drive-In, the Route 66 Welcome Center, the Ariston Cafe, and Lake Lou Yaeger for boating and beach swimming.

Camping season in the Gillespie area runs roughly April through October, which is also when private parks are open and concessions and pools are running. Country Bend Campground, for example, operates seasonally from April 1 through October 31, and its swimming pool runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Spring brings green-up and the year's heaviest rains; sites can be soft and storm chances run high, so reservations with electric hookups are useful.
Summer is peak season. Highs sit in the mid-80s with humid afternoons, thunderstorms are common, and weekends fill quickly at the private Litchfield parks and at the reservable sites at Beaver Dam. Demand also rises around Route 66 events along the I-55 corridor. Fall is the most comfortable stretch: cooler nights, lower humidity, fewer bugs, and good fishing on Beaver Dam Lake. Late October closes most private parks. Winter camping is limited; Beaver Dam stays open for primitive use and cross-country skiing, but private parks are closed and water systems are typically winterized.
How to book a campsite
Beaver Dam State Park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Reservations for the trailer sites and the cabin go through the ExploreMoreIL system; 40 of the campground sites are reservable, and the remaining sites are first-come, first-served. Youth-group areas also require an advance reservation through the same system. Sites have electric hookups and access to a sanitary dump station, but no individual water or sewer.
Private parks take bookings directly. Country Bend Campground uses an online reservation portal and offers a mix of primitive, electric, and full-hookup sites, so booking several weeks ahead is wise for summer Fridays and Saturdays. Lazy Days Campground accepts reservations by phone and through its website and caters to both overnighters and longer stays. For Rustic Acres Campgrounds and Kamper Kompanion RV Park, call ahead to confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policy before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rural roads, wooded sites, and a mix of gravel and grass pads. Beaver Dam State Park has shaded sites under mature oak and hickory, electricity at each pad, a central shower house with flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station, but no water or sewer at individual sites; rigs should arrive with full fresh-water tanks, and big-rig travelers should confirm site length before booking. Cell service is decent but not uniform under tree cover. Pets are allowed on leash.
Private parks near Litchfield generally offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, on-site laundry, bathhouses, and camp stores. Tree cover varies, which matters if a rooftop satellite or solar setup is in use. Summer brings mosquitoes near ponds and lake edges, so pack repellent.

You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and many hosts send a follow-up video or PDF cheat sheet you can reference at the campground. You can also message your host any time during the trip with quick questions. Pro tip: arrive 15 minutes early at pickup, bring a notebook, and take a short video of the dump-station procedure so future-you has a clear reference.

Drive 70 miles north to Springfield for Lincoln's Tomb, the Old State Capitol, and Route 66 history. Roll 90 miles southwest to Pere Marquette State Park along the Great River Road for bluff views over the Illinois River. Or push 240 miles north to Chicago for a long-weekend city escape. Cross-border travel into Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, or Indiana is generally allowed (just confirm with your host), but trips into Mexico are not covered. For a 300-mile weekend in a Class C, budget around $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fuel up in Litchfield or Staunton along I-55 before heading toward St. Louis, where prices climb.

Beaver Dam State Park reservations are handled through ExploreMoreIL, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' official reservation system, and the booking window opens months in advance. Carlyle Lake's U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds use Recreation.gov and typically open 6 months ahead. Some sites at Beaver Dam are also first-come, first-served, so mid-week arrivals often score a spot day-of. Pro tip: aim for a Sunday-through-Thursday stay and you can often skip reservations entirely while enjoying near-empty campgrounds.

I-55 sits 10 miles east and is your fast lane to St. Louis or Springfield, mostly straight with a few sharper curves near Litchfield. Watch for slow-moving farm vehicles spring through fall, deer at dawn and dusk, and occasional severe thunderstorms April through June (Macoupin County is in tornado alley). Snow is possible December through February but rarely heavy. Pro tip: avoid downtown Gillespie's older brick streets in a Class A or fifth wheel and stick to Route 4 and Macoupin Street for the smoothest approach.

Many hosts also include linens, towels, camp chairs, and outdoor mats. Wi-Fi is usually BYO (a phone hotspot works fine in Macoupin County's strong cell coverage). Many hosts in Macoupin County include the first tank of propane free. Pickup is usually 1 to 4 p.m. and drop-off by 11 a.m., though plenty of hosts flex on timing if you ask. energy.gov/energysaver/portable-generatorsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after drop-off, assuming no damage or extra cleaning. Any mileage or generator-hour overages are settled after the trip if you exceed the included allowance. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior and exterior at both pickup and drop-off; it is the best way to keep your security deposit return smooth and fast.
