Campgrounds near Golconda, Illinois
Golconda sits on the Ohio River in Pope County, Illinois, at the eastern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The town works well as a base for RV travelers touring southern Illinois, with the river on one side and roughly 280,000 acres of national forest on the other. Terrain in the surrounding Shawnee Hills is rugged for the Midwest, with sandstone bluffs, hardwood forest, and small lakes threaded by hiking and horse trails.
Campground options within a short drive of Golconda cover the full range for RV travelers. Birdsville RV and Campground and Birdsville Riverside RV Park are the closest full-service options in the immediate area. Dixon Springs State Park sits in Pope County, some ten miles west from the town of Golconda, and offers electric sites plus a dump station. Bear Branch Campgrounds serves horse campers and general RV traffic in the forest interior.
For a larger developed park with hookups, Fort Massac State Park has 50 electric campsites that have a mixture of 30 and 50 amp connections, sitting southwest along the Ohio River at Metropolis.
Things to do around Golconda
Hiking is the main draw. Dixon Springs State Park has short trails through canyons, boulder fields, and small waterfalls, plus a swimming pool complex that is popular with families. The wider Shawnee National Forest holds Garden of the Gods, Jackson Falls, Bell Smith Springs, and Lusk Creek Canyon within an hour of town.
Water activities center on the Ohio River and Golconda Marina, with fishing, boating, and kayak access. Since Fort Massac sits on the banks of the Ohio River, visitors can cast a line, and there is also a boat dock and launch ramp available for park visitors.
Horse riders use Bear Branch Campgrounds and other equestrian bases to reach the forest's trail network. Anglers can spend time at one of the fishing ponds inside Dixon Springs, stocked with bluegill, red-ear, bass, and catfish, and cast for catfish and bass on the Ohio River itself.

Peak RV season around Golconda runs from spring through early fall. At Fort Massac, camping is available all year round but is walk-in only during the off-season, and peak season runs from March until the end of September. Spring brings wildflowers and dogwood bloom in the Shawnee Hills, but also the region's wettest months, with flash flooding possible on forest trails during heavy storms.
Summer is hot and humid. Expect afternoon highs in the upper 80s Fahrenheit, thunderstorms, and heavy insect activity in shaded forest sites. This is the busiest stretch for family camping, so book state park sites well ahead.
Fall is the sweet spot for touring. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color through October make it prime time for hiking and river drives. Winter is quiet: most campgrounds stay open in some form, but water spigots and shower buildings may be shut down, and reservations shift to a walk-in or self-register model at some state parks.
How to book a site near Golconda
Camping reservations for Illinois state parks can be made through ExploreMoreIL. This covers both Dixon Springs and Fort Massac. Fort Massac offers 50 Class A vehicular campsites, complete with electricity, a disposal station, and a shower building, but no individual water or sewer at each pad. While site lengths vary, the max RV length that can be accommodated is 65 feet.
Private campgrounds around Golconda, including Birdsville RV and Campground, Birdsville Riverside RV Park, and Bear Branch Campgrounds, are booked directly with the operator. For weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and for any Shawnee National Forest holiday weekend, book several weeks out. Off-season midweek stays typically have wide availability.
What to expect on arrival
Most state park sites in the area offer 30 and 50 amp electric, a picnic table, and a fire ring, with shared water spigots and a central dump station rather than full hookups at each pad. Dixon Springs features vault toilets in the camping area, fire rings at most sites, and a dump station. Bathhouses at Fort Massac are modern but basic. Cell service can be spotty; some visitors report weak signal on both Verizon and T-Mobile near Fort Massac, and coverage drops further deep in the forest.
Roads into the Shawnee National Forest are narrow, hilly, and winding in places. Large fifth wheels and Class A rigs should stick to state routes and paved park entrances rather than forest service roads. Pets are welcome at Fort Massac State Park, but they must be on a leash at all times, and ground fires are restricted to the provided fire rings.
