Campgrounds near Hampshire, Illinois
Hampshire sits along the I-90 corridor in northern Kane County, roughly an hour northwest of downtown Chicago. The area is flat farmland transitioning into the wooded Kishwaukee River valley and the Fox River watershed, and it functions as a convenient overnight or weekend base for RV travelers heading to or from the greater Chicago area.
The closest options are private RV parks rather than state or federal parks. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort sits near the Hampshire exit of I-90 outside Marengo, with an eight-acre lake and sandy beach on site. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday is in Union, a short drive from Hampshire and close to Donley's Wild West Town. Sycamore RV Resort lies southwest in DeKalb County with two spring-fed lakes totaling roughly thirty acres.
Farther west toward Belvidere and Garden Prairie, NorthWoods RV Resort and Pine Country RV and Camping Resort offer larger, amenity-heavy grounds, with NorthWoods fronting the Kishwaukee River and Pine Country tucked into wooded acreage north of US 20.
Things to do near Hampshire
On-site activities lean toward family use. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort has fishing, complimentary paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks, plus a sandy beach on its eight-acre lake. Sycamore RV Resort adds two spring-fed lakes totaling about thirty acres, plus tennis, a swimming beach, and boat rentals. Pine Country and NorthWoods both offer swimming pools, playgrounds, and pond or river fishing, and NorthWoods also has a hot tub and community lodge.
Off-site, the Illinois Railway Museum in Union is the region's headline attraction, along with Donley's Wild West Town. Metra commuter rail from nearby stations provides a car-free route into downtown Chicago for sightseeing. Marengo Ridge Conservation Area and area forest preserves are also within easy reach.

Northern Illinois has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with July highs averaging in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and thunderstorms common through the afternoon. This is peak camping season, and weekends at KOA, Pine Country, and Lehman's fill quickly around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Spring and fall bring cool nights and mild days. Several area parks operate on a seasonal schedule: Sycamore RV Resort runs April 1 through October 31, and Pine Country runs April 15 through October 16. Shoulder-season stays are quieter, but overnight lows can drop near freezing in April and October, so heaters and freshwater planning matter.
Winters are cold with regular snow and sub-freezing temperatures. Most private parks in the area close or shift to limited seasonal use between November and March. Travelers planning off-season stops should confirm open dates directly and expect limited services and staffing.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

Bogdan is an incredible host. He patiently explained everything about the RV, was reachable and helpful when I needed some advice. Camper is well kept and is a labor of love. We really enjoyed the experience.

How to book
Nearly all campgrounds near Hampshire are privately owned, so reservations are made directly with each property or through its booking platform rather than a central agency such as Recreation.gov or ReserveAmerica. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort takes bookings by phone and through third-party platforms. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday reserves through the KOA website and app, with KOA Rewards discounts for members.
Pine Country RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property, so members book through the Thousand Trails system and non-members can reserve as guests through RV on the Go. Pine Country typically requires a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights on holidays. Summer weekends and holiday periods should be booked several weeks ahead.
What to expect on site
Sites near Hampshire are mostly full-hookup RV pads with 30 and 50 amp service common. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday offers standard KOA amenities including deluxe cabins. NorthWoods RV Resort is a gated, 60-acre park that accommodates rigs up to about sixty-five feet and includes a heated pool, hot tub, new bathhouses, community lodge, snack bar, and Kishwaukee River frontage.
Expect proximity to I-90 traffic and rail lines at several parks. Reviewers of Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort note ongoing highway noise, and NorthWoods has train tracks that affect a subset of sites near the entrance. Sycamore RV Resort is described as well maintained, with clean bathhouses, a camp store, laundry, and mowed walking paths around its two lakes.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hampshire, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hampshire, IL?
An RV rental in Hampshire, IL is often a fraction of what you would pay for a hotel and flight Midwest getaway. On RVezy, travel trailers near Hampshire typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes land between $185 and $295, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Hosts set their own pricing, so booking midweek or during the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October usually lowers the nightly rate. Tip: filter by Instant Book and sort by price to spot a cheap RV rental in Hampshire that still has strong reviews. Booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead of summer weekends locks in the best value before Chicagoland families snap them up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hampshire%2C%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hampshire, IL?
Great news for first-timers: a regular Illinois Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hampshire, IL, including big Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Illinois does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal recreational vehicles, no matter the size. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the platform when you reserve. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most renters are surprised how quickly the booking and verification process moves, often the same day you request a trip.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classes.htmlWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my Hampshire RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you hit the road. Every RVezy booking for an RV rental in Hampshire includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, or a tow off I-90 are handled with one phone call. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle and pairs with the included insurance for peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your trip, so the level of coverage is your call, not the host's. That means you can dial up confidence for a longer motorhome rental Hampshire road trip or keep it lean for a quick overnight at a local campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Hampshire trip plans change?
Booking is low risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a Hampshire RV with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. Because every listing uses the same RVezy-managed framework, you will not see different cancellation rules on different Hampshire rentals. Tip: if a blizzard warning or severe storm threatens your dates, contact RVezy support right away so your situation can be reviewed quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hampshire, IL?
Absolutely, plenty of Hampshire hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots. Use the 'Pet-Friendly' filter on RVezy to instantly narrow your search to a pet-friendly RV rental in Hampshire that allows dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you're on the road, you've got fantastic spots to roam: Burnidge Forest Preserve in Elgin has off-leash dog areas just 15 minutes south, and Paul Wolff Campground inside the Kane County Forest Preserves welcomes leashed pets at every site. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees, breed limits, and shedding rules, then bring a mat for muddy paws so the RV stays clean and your deposit stays untouched.
kaneforest.com/campingPicnic/camping.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Hampshire?
Yes, and it is the easiest way to start your trip. Many Hampshire hosts offer RV delivery in Hampshire and the surrounding Kane and McHenry County area, meaning they will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite, driveway, or event venue, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before leaving. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then check the listing for the per-mile delivery fee. Popular drop spots include Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin, Hickory Hollow Campground near Rockford, and Chicago Northwest KOA in Union. For first-time renters nervous about backing into a site, delivery turns the whole experience into a true vacation from minute one.
kaneforest.com/campingPicnic/camping.aspxHow does mileage work, and how far can I realistically travel from Hampshire?
You have real range. Most Hampshire hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras priced around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, and some listings offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage if you ask. From Hampshire you are well placed for an RV road trip to Starved Rock State Park (about 75 miles southwest), Wisconsin Dells (about 175 miles north), Galena's rolling hills (about 130 miles west), or Lake Geneva, WI (about 60 miles north). Tip: map your full route before booking, then arrange a mileage package with the host upfront, it is almost always cheaper than paying per-mile overages at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hampshire%2C%20IllinoisWhere are the best campgrounds near Hampshire, IL?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Hampshire include Paul Wolff Campground in Elgin (full hookups, fishing lake, 15 minutes south), Chicago Northwest KOA in Union (pool, mini golf, ~20 minutes northwest), Jellystone Park Yogi Bear Camp-Resort in Pingree Grove (water park, family programming, less than 10 minutes away), Hickory Hollow Campground near Rockford (quiet, wooded, ~40 minutes west), and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo (lakeside sites, ~15 minutes northwest). For state-park scenery, Rock Cut State Park near Rockford is about an hour out and has electric sites among rolling oak hills. Pro tip: most Kane County Forest Preserve campgrounds open in early April and book up fast for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates firm up.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.rockcut.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Hampshire, IL?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Hampshire. Summer highs sit in the upper 70s to low 80s with warm, humid evenings perfect for campfires, while May and September deliver mild 60s to low 70s days, fewer mosquitoes, and lower nightly rates. Fall foliage along the Fox River Valley peaks in mid-October and is genuinely stunning. Winters are cold (lows often in the teens, snow common from December through February), so most campgrounds close, but a handful of year-round parks plus winterized rentals make a snowy Hampshire RV trip totally doable if you love quiet. Pro tip: book Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends at least two months out, they sell out across northern Illinois.
weather.gov/lot/I have never rented an RV before, will I actually know how to use it?
Yes, and you are not on your own. First time renting an RV in Hampshire usually starts with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough where your host shows you how to run the generator, dump tanks, deploy the awning, level the rig, and switch from propane to electric. You can message the host with questions before, during, and after the trip, and RVezy support is reachable if anything feels confusing. Tip: ask your host to record a short video of the dump and hookup process on your phone during the walkthrough, you will thank yourself the first time you pull into Paul Wolff Campground at dusk and need a quick refresher.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you have a flat tire on I-90, the generator quits at Starved Rock, or you lock yourself out at a rest stop near Rockford, one phone call dispatches help. The roadside team handles towing, tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. For mechanical questions specific to the RV, message your host directly, they know every quirk of their rig and can usually troubleshoot in minutes. Tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Hampshire, and snap a photo of the VIN and license plate so you can share details fast if anything happens on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hampshire RV rental to Wisconsin or across state lines?
Yes, crossing into Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa, or Michigan is common and allowed on most RVezy listings, with insurance coverage following you across state lines within the U.S. Hampshire's location off I-90 makes it an ideal launchpad: Lake Geneva is about 60 miles north, Wisconsin Dells about 175 miles, Door County roughly 240 miles, and Indiana Dunes National Park about 105 miles east. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Canada trips may be possible with host approval, so message before booking if that is your plan. Tip: confirm your route with the host so any state-specific tolls (Illinois Tollway I-PASS) are clear before you head out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in a Hampshire RV?
Easy to plan for. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but drop your tow vehicle to roughly 10 to 14 MPG, Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes typically run 8 to 12 MPG, and big Class A rigs land between 6 and 10 MPG. Northern Illinois gas prices have been hovering around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon for regular unleaded and a bit higher for diesel. For a 300-mile round trip from Hampshire to Galena in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Hampshire or Marengo before heading into Chicago or Wisconsin, suburban Kane County prices usually beat both downtown and tourist-town pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hampshire?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Kane County Forest Preserve campgrounds (like Paul Wolff) open reservations on a rolling basis up to several months in advance and fill quickly for summer weekends. Illinois state parks such as Rock Cut and Chain O'Lakes use ExploreMoreIL.com and accept reservations up to six months ahead. Private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA and Jellystone Pingree Grove book through their own websites, often a year out for holiday weekends. For weekday trips in May, September, or October, you can often grab a site 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if a Saturday is sold out, check Sunday-through-Thursday windows, midweek Hampshire-area sites stay open and run quieter and cheaper.
exploremoreil.com/What are driving conditions like around Hampshire, IL?
Driving an RV around Hampshire is refreshingly easy compared to most big-city launch points. You are right off I-90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) with wide lanes, gentle terrain, and farmland views, perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Avoid rush hour on I-90 eastbound toward Chicago between 6 to 9 a.m. and westbound from 3 to 7 p.m. Watch for low-clearance bridges if you head into older Chicago neighborhoods (most viaducts under 13 feet are signed). Winter brings snow and occasional ice from December through February, and summer can bring strong thunderstorms. Tip: use the I-PASS transponder included in many host rigs, the Illinois Tollway charges higher rates for cash-paying vehicles.
illinoistollway.com/tolling-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hampshire?
Most Hampshire-area campgrounds are well-equipped. Expect 30 or 50 amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at private parks like Jellystone Pingree Grove and Lehman's Lakeside, plus pools, laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. Kane County Forest Preserve sites typically offer electric and water with central dump stations and showerhouses. For dumping tanks and refilling fresh water on travel days, public dump stations exist at Chicago Northwest KOA in Union and many Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-90. Most state parks have a free or low-cost dump station even for non-campers. Pro tip: keep a 25-foot fresh-water hose and a 15-to-30-amp electrical adapter handy, almost every Hampshire-area site can be served with that combo.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Hampshire?
More than you'd think. Hampshire-area rentals on RVezy range from cozy Class B campervans with a bed, kitchenette, and wet bath to family-sized Class C motorhomes sleeping 6 to 8 with a full kitchen, separate bedroom, bathroom with shower, dinette, and outside awning. Larger Class A and fifth wheel rentals add features like residential fridges, washer/dryers, multiple TVs, slide-outs, and onboard generators. Most listings include linens, kitchenware, a propane tank, and seatbelted seating for everyone sleeping aboard. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in rural campgrounds, so plan to use your phone hotspot. Pro tip: filter listings by 'Sleeps' count and scroll the photos carefully, hosts list every appliance and add-on (generator, bike racks, outdoor speakers) so you can pick the perfect rig.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when booking?
Plenty of options make the trip easier. Popular Hampshire host add-ons include generator use ($3 to $5 per hour or a flat daily rate), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding packages ($15 to $30 per bed), bike racks, kayak carriers, portable grills, and camp chairs. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hampshire, with delivery available for an extra per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with most including 100 to 150 miles per night and overage charges of about $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Tip: bundle add-ons in your initial booking request, hosts often discount when you take multiple extras, and it saves a stop in nearby Huntley before you head to your campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hampshire%2C%20IllinoisHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and transparent. When you book your campervan rental Hampshire or any other RV through RVezy, payment is processed securely through the platform, with no cash, checks, or third-party apps. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your credit card before the trip and released after the host confirms the rig came back clean, undamaged, and with tanks handled per the listing. Refueling, dumping, and cleaning fees, if any, are clearly listed upfront. Tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video of the RV at both pickup and drop-off, it is the single best way to ensure your full deposit is returned promptly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hampshire in winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, and winter Hampshire RV trips have a quiet magic. Several local hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power-ready electric heaters, perfect for ice fishing on Lake Geneva, snowmobiling in McHenry County, or a cozy cabin-on-wheels weekend at Chain O'Lakes State Park (about 35 miles northeast and open year-round for camping). Daytime highs from December to February typically range from the upper 20s to mid 30s, with overnight lows in the teens. Pro tip: ask your host for a winter prep walkthrough covering antifreeze in the gray tank, skirting tips, and how to keep the freshwater line from freezing, then book a site with 50-amp service so you can run a space heater alongside the furnace.
