Campgrounds and RV parks near Henry, IL

The Illinois River defines the area's outdoor appeal. Boating, bank fishing, and paddling are easy from Henry itself, and migratory waterfowl viewing along the river corridor is strong in spring and fall. Inland, the Hennepin Canal State Trail runs for about 93 miles along an old towpath, open to hiking, biking, fishing, and horseback riding, with equestrian use permitted from April 15 through October 31. Roughly 45 minutes northeast, Matthiessen State Park offers canyon hiking, waterfalls, and a 9-mile multi-use horse and mountain-bike trail system, while adjacent Starved Rock State Park draws visitors for sandstone canyons and river bluffs. Closer to camp, Condit's Ranch has a swimming beach, playground, and catch-and-release ponds, and Sankoty Lakes offers a stocked trout stream, fly fishing, and paddling on spring-fed lakes.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window in this part of Illinois. Private parks like Condit's Ranch typically operate through the warm season, while Sankoty Lakes and Pleasant Creek Campground run similar schedules with cabin and glamping options that extend shoulder seasons. State-managed sites follow tighter calendars. The equestrian campground and horse trails at Matthiessen State Park open May 1, weather permitting, and close by November 1, with trails closed for at least 24 hours after any rainfall. The Hennepin Canal is open for camping year-round in principle, but drinking water along the route is limited to a few locks and the visitor center, so bring plenty in warm months. Summer weekends fill fastest, especially around holidays and events at Starved Rock. Fall brings cool nights and strong foliage along the canal and river bluffs. Winter camping is possible at some private parks but limited, and the Matthiessen equestrian area is closed.

Amenity levels range widely. Private parks near Henry lean family-oriented: Condit's Ranch offers a mix of primitive tent spots and full-hookup sites, plus a shower house, camp store, and beach. Pleasant Creek Campground provides wooded sites, a stocked pond, cabins, and a bathhouse. Sankoty Lakes runs pull-through RV sites with 30 and 50 amp service, full hookups, and an on-site restaurant. State sites are rustic. Lock 6 is a small primitive area with a modest parking area, vault toilets, picnic tables, and no water or electric hookups; nearby rail tracks can be noisy. The Matthiessen equestrian sites include tables, grills, pit toilets, and trail access. Cell coverage is uneven off the main roads. Bring drinking water, firewood arrangements, and cash for state-site fees.
