Camping near Hillsboro, Illinois
Hillsboro sits in Montgomery County in central Illinois, roughly midway between Springfield and St. Louis, and serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the surrounding lakes, woodlands, and small-town Route 66 corridor. The town's main draw is water: Lake Glenn Shoals is a 1,250-acre reservoir in Montgomery County, created in 1976 by damming the Middle Fork of Shoal Creek for recreation, sport fishing, and water supply, and the older 110-acre Hillsboro Lake, commonly called the old lake, sits just south of it with a 10 mph speed limit across the entire lake.
RV travelers have a mix of private parks and public options within easy driving range. Country Bend Campground, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, Lazy Days Campground, Rustic Acres Campgrounds, and Timber Trails Campground are the closest private campgrounds and typically cater to travelers wanting full hookups, laundry, and family-oriented amenities.
For state-park camping, Beaver Dam State Park sits about 7 miles southwest of Carlinville on 750 acres of oak and hickory woodland, roughly 40 minutes from Hillsboro and a common overflow choice when private sites fill.
Things to do near Hillsboro
Fishing and boating anchor most trips. Both Glenn Shoals Lake and Old Lake Hillsboro offer boating, skiing, canoeing, and fishing, and both are stocked with bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and tiger muskie. Concrete boat ramps serve Glenn Shoals at the North Marina and at the South Marina near the dam, and all boats need a permit, which is available as an annual or daily pass.
At Beaver Dam State Park, the 59-acre lake supports fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, and the park adds hiking trails, an archery range, and wildlife viewing. Kids often gravitate to the playground and the short lake-loop trail.
Hillsboro itself hosts a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks, concerts, and a cardboard boat regatta at the old lake park, making early July a popular family weekend.

December - February

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with a strong seasonal swing. Summers are warm and humid, spring is typically the wettest stretch with frequent thunderstorms, and winters are cold with regular snowfall and are the driest season. Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through mid-October, with the biggest crowds tied to the Fourth of July, Labor Day, and fall color weekends in October.
Spring brings the strongest thunderstorm and tornado risk. Late April into June can deliver heavy rain, and low-lying sites near the lakes occasionally see standing water. Bugs pick up quickly once evenings warm.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Most private parks in the area reduce services or close from late fall through March, and state-park water systems are typically shut off. Cross-country skiing and ice skating are options at Beaver Dam State Park when conditions allow, and ice fishing draws locals to the reservoirs during cold snaps.
How to book campsites near Hillsboro
Private campgrounds around Hillsboro, including Country Bend Campground, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, Lazy Days Campground, Rustic Acres Campgrounds, and Timber Trails Campground, generally take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book weekends four to eight weeks ahead in summer, and further out for holiday weekends.
For state-park sites, Illinois uses a centralized reservation system. At Beaver Dam State Park, the rent-a-cabin and many campsites are available for reservation through the ExploreMoreIL website, with 40 reservable campsites and the remainder first-come, first-served.
Boaters heading to Glenn Shoals or Old Lake Hillsboro should factor in the required lake permit. One permit covers both Hillsboro lakes for the calendar year, and daily permits are also sold at Hillsboro City Hall and the South Marina.
What to expect on arrival
Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, agricultural surroundings, and short drives between attractions. Sites at private parks near Hillsboro are typically grassy or gravel with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer available at most full-hookup sites. Cell service is generally reliable across Montgomery County, though it can thin out inside wooded state-park loops.
At Beaver Dam State Park, plan for a rustic setup. The trailer camping area has electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station, but individual sites do not have water hookups, and a shower building with flush toilets sits in the center of the loop.
Bring bug spray for evenings near the water, a lake permit if you plan to launch, and a fishing license for anyone 16 or older. Grocery, fuel, and hardware stops are easy in Hillsboro, Litchfield, and Carlinville.

RV rental in Hillsboro is an affordable way to explore central Illinois. Nightly rates on RVezy typically range from $85 to $150 for travel trailers, $125 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches. Pricing depends on RV size, age, and season, with summer weekends around Glenn Shoals Lake and Old Settlers Days in August commanding peak prices. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book on RVezy to lock in lower rates from hosts who reward fast bookings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillsboro%2C%20IllinoisWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Hillsboro, Illinois?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hillsboro. Illinois does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels under typical recreational weights. To be an approved driver on RVezy, you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking platform. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Once verified, you are free to point your motorhome rental in Hillsboro toward Glenn Shoals Lake or Route 66 south to St. Louis with no extra paperwork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Hillsboro protected if something happens?
Yes, every RV rental in Hillsboro booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll out toward Glenn Shoals Lake with real peace of mind. You choose your protection tier at checkout (not the host), so you can match coverage to your comfort level, and the plan provides substantial financial protection for damage to the RV during your trip. Pro tip: pick your protection tier before adding extras like delivery or generator use, because higher coverage often pays off if you are a first-time renter heading into rural Montgomery County back roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Hillsboro RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), so the rules are clear and consistent whether you are renting a campervan in Hillsboro for a weekend at Sherwood Forest Campground or a fifth wheel for a longer Illinois loop. There is a money-back grace period after booking, plus refund options depending on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans stay protected. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later, since the grace period gives you breathing room to adjust plans if work or weather shifts before your Hillsboro RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Hillsboro?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Hillsboro is easy to find on RVezy. Just use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see motorhomes and trailers whose hosts welcome four-legged co-pilots (some may charge a small pet fee, which is shown on the listing). Hillsboro is a wonderful dog destination: Sherwood Forest Campground between Old Lake Hillsboro and Glenn Shoals Lake welcomes pets, and the shoreline trails around Glenn Shoals give pups plenty of sniff space. Pro tip: bring a long lead and a collapsible water bowl, because summer humidity in Montgomery County can climb fast, and shaded picnic areas at the lakes are perfect for a midday cool-down.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Hillsboro?
Yes, RV delivery in Hillsboro is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Sherwood Forest Campground, Glenn Shoals Lake's marina campground, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when browsing motorhome rentals in Hillsboro, and enter your destination address to see delivery fees upfront. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're heading to a lakeside spot and don't want to back a 30-foot trailer down a wooded campground lane on day one.
hillsboroillinois.net/lakes/How far can I drive my RV rental from Hillsboro?
You've got plenty of range for a great Hillsboro RV trip. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per night), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for road trippers heading farther afield. From Hillsboro you can reach Springfield in about 55 miles, St. Louis in 65 miles, Carlyle Lake in 45 miles, Shawnee National Forest in roughly 200 miles, and Starved Rock State Park in about 175 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a big Route 66 loop or a multi-state run, message the host before booking to ask about an unlimited-mileage add-on or a higher daily cap. It often costs less than paying per-mile overage at the end.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/maps/road-maps.htmlWhere are the best campgrounds near Hillsboro, IL?
The best campgrounds near Hillsboro put you right on the water. Sherwood Forest Campground sits between Old Lake Hillsboro and Glenn Shoals Lake with electric sites, a swimming pool, and easy boat ramp access. Glenn Shoals Lake's city-managed campground offers lakeside RV sites near the South Marina with fishing, fuel, and a seasonal restaurant. Coon Creek Campground at Carlyle Lake (about 45 miles south) is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers favorite. Beaver Dam State Park near Plainview (around 25 miles west) has quiet, wooded electric sites. Pro tip: call Hillsboro City Hall at 217-532-5566 to confirm site availability at the city lakes, since policies for reservations versus first-come spots can shift seasonally.
hillsboroillinois.net/lakes/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Hillsboro?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Hillsboro is late April through mid-October, with May, June, and September being the most comfortable months. Summer highs in Montgomery County average 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity, while spring and fall bring pleasant 65 to 75 degree days and cool sleeping weather. Winters dip into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so most local hosts pause bookings from December through February. Pro tip: target Memorial Day weekend for opening fishing tournaments at Glenn Shoals Lake, or early October for the cottonwoods and maples turning gold along Shoal Creek, one of the prettiest weeks of the year for a Hillsboro RV trip.
weather.gov/lsx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in Hillsboro?
You're going to do great. Hillsboro is one of the friendliest places for first time renting an RV: traffic is light, Route 16 and Illinois 127 are wide and flat, and parking lots at the lakes and downtown shops are RV-sized. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane system, and you'll have their number and 24/7 RVezy support in your pocket the whole trip. Pro tip: do a practice loop through the Glenn Shoals Lake park road before heading to your campsite. It's quiet, scenic, and a stress-free way to get a feel for turning radius and braking before you hit the highway.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions/getting-around-illinois.htmlWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Hillsboro booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like tire changes, lockouts, jump starts, and towing. Just call the number in your RVezy app and help is dispatched to your location, whether you are at the Glenn Shoals dam, parked along Route 66 in Litchfield, or 60 miles down I-55 toward St. Louis. Your host is also a quick text away for questions specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your VIN on day one so you are never digging through paperwork if something happens after dark.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hillsboro RV rental on a multi-state road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Hillsboro is one of the most fun ways to see the Midwest. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental United States, including popular runs south on Route 66 to St. Louis (65 miles), east to Indianapolis (about 240 miles), west to Hannibal, Missouri (110 miles), and north to Chicago (240 miles). Travel into Canada may be possible with host approval, but trips into Mexico are not permitted due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your route, and ask about higher mileage packages if you're chaining together Lincoln sites in Springfield, the Gateway Arch, and the Ozarks in one loop.
enjoyillinois.com/What should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Hillsboro?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your Hillsboro RV trip budget, but it's easy to plan for. Travel trailers towed by a pickup average 10 to 14 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and larger Class A coaches average 6 to 10 mpg. Gas prices in Hillsboro and Litchfield typically run a bit below the Illinois state average since you're outside the Chicago tax zone. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: top off at the Pilot or Love's near Litchfield off I-55 exit 52 before heading out, since rural stations between Hillsboro and Carlyle Lake can be 30 to 50 cents per gallon higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hillsboro?
For the best sites, book 60 to 90 days ahead for summer weekends and holidays, and 2 to 3 weeks ahead for shoulder-season trips. Sherwood Forest Campground and the city-managed sites at Glenn Shoals Lake fill quickly around the Fourth of July (Hillsboro's famous cardboard boat regatta and fireworks happen on Old Lake Hillsboro) and during Old Settlers Days in mid-August. For state park sites like Beaver Dam State Park, reserve through Reserve America's Illinois DNR portal. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have openings even in peak summer, and you'll often get a quieter, more scenic site than weekend-only campers.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camping.htmlWhat are the driving conditions like around Hillsboro?
Driving an RV around Hillsboro is refreshingly easy. The town sits on gently rolling prairie at the western edge of the Illinois coal belt, with wide state highways like Illinois 16 and Illinois 127, and quick access to I-55 (about 12 miles west via Litchfield). There are no mountain passes or narrow tunnels to worry about, just a few rural overpasses with standard 13 foot 6 inch clearances. Spring and early summer can bring thunderstorms and occasional tornado watches, while winter may bring icy patches. Pro tip: check the Illinois Department of Transportation's GettingAroundIllinois.com map before any long drive, especially during harvest season when slow-moving combines share the rural routes around Montgomery County.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities will I find at Hillsboro-area campgrounds?
Hillsboro campgrounds keep things simple and welcoming. At Sherwood Forest Campground you'll find electric hookups, restrooms with showers, a swimming pool, laundry, and lake access (note: sites are electric and water only, no individual sewer, so plan a dump stop). Glenn Shoals Lake's South Marina campground offers electric sites and is steps from fuel, bait, and a seasonal restaurant. Beaver Dam State Park has electric sites with a central dump station and potable water fill. Pro tip: if you need a full hookup with sewer, Litchfield KOA (about 12 miles west off I-55) is the closest reliable option and a great basecamp for exploring both Hillsboro lakes and Route 66 sights.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.beaverdam.htmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Hillsboro?
You will feel right at home. Most RV rentals in Hillsboro come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, three-burner stove, and oven, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically include a TV, roof air conditioning, a furnace, and a generator for off-grid stays near Glenn Shoals Lake. Most hosts also provide pots, linens, and outdoor chairs. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list for Wi-Fi hotspots and solar, which are increasingly common and a great perk if you plan to work remotely or stream a movie after a day on the lake.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillsboro%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Hillsboro?
Hillsboro hosts offer plenty of helpful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup, generator use, bike racks, camp chairs and tables, linen and kitchen kits, propane refills, and dump-and-fill service on return (typical fees range from $25 to $150 per add-on). Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hillsboro, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily allowances clearly posted and overage rates typically $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a generator add-on if you are heading to a non-electric site near Glenn Shoals Lake, so you get a fully set-up, fully powered camp without lifting a finger.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillsboro%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Hillsboro RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV in Hillsboro on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never in cash directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and is released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape. To avoid deposit issues, do a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, return with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and use a dump station before drop-off unless you have added a dump-and-fill service. Pro tip: message your host the morning of return with your estimated arrival time for the fastest path to a full deposit refund.
