Campgrounds near Holiday Hills, Illinois
Holiday Hills is a small village in McHenry County in northeast Illinois, sitting along the Fox River in the heart of the Chain O'Lakes region. The area holds Illinois's largest concentration of natural lakes, making it a practical base for RV travelers who want water access without a long drive from Chicago or southern Wisconsin.
The closest public campground is Chain O'Lakes State Park, a water-oriented recreation area that borders three natural lakes (Grass, Marie and Nippersink) and the Fox River, with a 44-acre lake within its boundaries. Camping is popular there, with more than 230 campsites and a youth group camp. Turner Lake South is one of the park's Class B-Premium camping areas.
Private options fill in the gaps. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort sits on Fish Lake in nearby Volo, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park offers direct Chain access, and Fox River Recreation runs a riverfront campground in Antioch. Just across the state line, the Kenosha County Fair Association in Wilmot, Wisconsin adds a fairgrounds-style option with RV hookups.
Things to do near Holiday Hills
Water dominates the itinerary. The interconnected Chain O'Lakes system supports boating, fishing, kayaking and swimming, with bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass all present. Rentals for motorboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks are available seasonally through a concessionaire at Chain O'Lakes State Park.
On land, Chain O'Lakes State Park has seven picnic areas and four trail systems, the Nature's Way hiking trail from Oak Grove Picnic Area, an accessible quarter-mile trail at Pike Marsh North, plus 8 miles of equestrian trail and a 6-mile biking/hiking trail. Families staying at Fish Lake Beach also get a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, dog park, indoor pickleball court, basketball courts, a softball field, playgrounds, and a full calendar of activities at the Pavilion. Six Flags Great America in Gurnee and the Volo Auto Museum are short drives east.

Northern Illinois runs on a short, intense camping calendar. Most private campgrounds near Holiday Hills open in spring and close by mid-fall: Fish Lake Beach's overnight season runs from May 1 through October 15, Fox River Recreation is open from April 1 to October 31, and the campground at the Kenosha County Fairgrounds is open May 1 through September 30. Chain O'Lakes State Park operates on a longer schedule but with reduced services in winter.
Summer is peak. Watersports drive demand at Chain O'Lakes, and reservations at nearby RV parks are harder to come by when the park gets crowded. Fall shifts to fishing and foliage: cooler temperatures make hiking through changing leaves more comfortable, the fishing stays strong, and hunting seasons open in the state park after the last weekend in October.
Winter closes most private grounds. Chain O'Lakes offers hunting, ice fishing, ice skating and cross-country skiing in the fall and winter months, but RV traffic drops sharply after October.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book campsites near Holiday Hills
State-park sites at Chain O'Lakes are the trickiest to secure. Camping reservations are accepted at ExploreMoreIL or by calling 866-716-6550, and summer reservations near Chicago fill early, so booking well in advance is wise. Turner Lake South is one of the park's Class B-Premium areas and books through the same system.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Fish Lake Beach takes overnight reservations by phone or online, Fox River Recreation books direct with the family-owned office, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park works directly with guests. At the Kenosha County Fair Association campground, future reservations can be made up to 11 months prior to stay, and spots for special events fill quickly.
Holiday weekends and fair week fill first, so lock those dates in before locking in the RV.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of full-service private resorts and simpler state-park loops. Fish Lake Beach leans resort, with four ways to stay including full hookup RV sites, long term RV sites, cabins, and lakefront tent sites, plus a beach, pool and pavilion programming. Fox River Recreation is quieter and river-facing, sprawled across roughly 25 wooded acres along the Fox.
State-park sites are more basic. Chain O'Lakes has Class A-Premium and Class B-Premium loops with varying hookup levels. Maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30 day period, all campers must bring their own firewood since no one is allowed to pick up wood in the park, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
Cell service is generally solid; grocery and fuel stops are close in McHenry, Fox Lake and Antioch.
