RV camping near Island Lake, Illinois
Island Lake sits in McHenry County in northeast Illinois, about an hour northwest of Chicago and within a short drive of the Chain O' Lakes region, the state's largest concentration of natural lakes. The area is built around water recreation. The Fox River connects a string of lakes used heavily by boaters and anglers, and public land at Chain O' Lakes State Park comprises over 6,000 acres with more than 230 campsites.
RV options within a 30 to 45 minute drive cover several styles. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo is a full-hookup private resort on Fish Lake. Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park is a Class B-Premium state-run area near the 44-acre Turner Lake. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park sits on the Chain itself, and Fox River Recreation offers river-adjacent camping. Just over the Wisconsin border, the Kenosha County Fair Association grounds also accommodate RVs.
The location suits families combining a Chicago-area visit with a lake-based trip, since commuter rail service reaches downtown Chicago from nearby Fox Lake.
Things to do around Island Lake
Water activity anchors most trips. The Chain O' Lakes system has no horsepower limit on the main chain, and the fishery includes bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, catfish, and white and yellow bass. Boat, canoe, and kayak rentals run seasonally at the state park through concessionaire Gill's on the Chain. Any watercraft using the Chain must display a current Fox Waterway Agency user sticker, required by law.
On land, Chain O' Lakes State Park has seven picnic areas, four trail systems for hiking, biking, and birdwatching, and an archery range. Turner Lake inside the park is limited to electric trolling motors, which keeps it calmer than the main chain. Families can add the Volo Auto Museum and Volo Bog State Natural Area, both within a short drive of Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort.

The camping window in this part of Illinois runs essentially late spring through mid-fall. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort operates from May 1 through October 15. The Chain O' Lakes State Park concession stand and boating rentals run April through mid-October. Summer weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are the busiest at Chain O' Lakes, so reserve well ahead.
Autumn brings cooler temperatures, strong fishing, and fall color across the park's oak and hickory woods. Chain O' Lakes closes to general use for scheduled hunts from the beginning of November through mid-December, when dove, waterfowl, archery deer, and permit pheasant hunting take over. Check the park office before any late-season trip.
Winter shifts activity to ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing. Summer park hours run 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. starting April 1; winter hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. Entrance gates lock overnight, and once shut, re-entry is not possible until morning.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book a site
State-park sites at Chain O' Lakes, including Turner Lake South, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system at camp.exploremoreil.com or by phone at 866-716-6550. The maximum stay is 14 nights in any 30-day period. A responsible adult 18 or older must acquire the permit and have a camp shelter set up at check-in. Alcohol is prohibited in the state-park campgrounds, and campers must bring their own firewood.
Private campgrounds are booked directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort takes reservations through its website; longer stays over 12 days require a phone call. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, Fox River Recreation, and Kenosha County Fair Association each handle their own reservations, so call ahead for site dimensions and hookup details before booking an RV rental.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of styles. Chain O' Lakes State Park has Class A-Premium areas at Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den with electric sites, plus three Class B-Premium primitive areas including Turner Lake South. A dump station is available near the campground entrance, and gathering firewood in the park is prohibited.
Private resorts near Island Lake lean toward full hookups, beaches, pools, and family programming. Fish Lake Beach offers water and electric with sewer available on some sites, a heated pool, hot tub, dog park, and rules keeping dogs off the sandy beach and out of the roped swim area.
Bring bug protection. The wooded, marshy setting supports heavy insect populations in warmer months, and ticks are common. Store food securely, since raccoons are active after dusk.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Island Lake, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Island Lake, IL?
An RV rental in Island Lake is one of the most affordable ways to explore northern Illinois and the Chain O'Lakes region. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $140 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $400 for larger Class A coaches, with hosts setting their own nightly rates, mileage allowances, and add-ons. To find a cheap RV rental in Island Lake, book on weekdays, travel in May or September shoulder season, and look for listings offering delivery so you save on tow vehicle fuel. enjoyillinois.com/plan-your-trip/places-to-stay/camping-and-rv-parks-in-illinois/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Island Lake, IL?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Island Lake for almost every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. Illinois ties license class to weight, but the standard Class D license already covers any personal-use RV with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 16,000 pounds or less, which includes virtually every campervan, Class B, Class C, and travel trailer you'll find on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow, so there's no extra paperwork. Visiting from another state or country? Your home license (or an International Driving Permit) is honored in Illinois, so you're cleared to roll.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlIs RV rental insurance and protection included when I book in Island Lake?
Yes, every RV rental in Island Lake booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway feeling covered. You (not the host) choose your protection plan tier at checkout, and each plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters real peace of mind, especially first-timers heading to Chain O'Lakes State Park or the Fox River for the weekend. Pro tip: review the plan options carefully at booking, you can upgrade in seconds before payment.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Island Lake RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Island Lake is low risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, so the same rules apply to every listing. Every reservation includes a grace period right after booking when you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, refunds depend on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so you can rebook another rig. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best RVs in McHenry County, you still have that grace-period cushion if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Island Lake, IL?

Plenty of local hosts welcome dogs, and many include perks like washable seat covers or a fenced yard for your pup to stretch out before pickup. Once you're on the road, Chain O'Lakes State Park and Moraine Hills State Park both allow leashed pets on most trails, and the Fox River waterfront in nearby McHenry has dog-friendly patios for a post-hike treat. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your pet's size and breed, it helps confirm fit and any pet fee up front.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park/chainolakes.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Island Lake?
Yes, RV delivery in Island Lake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drive the rig straight to your driveway, to Chain O'Lakes State Park (about 20 minutes north), Moraine Hills State Park in McHenry, or to a private campground of your choice, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on the search page to see hosts offering this service and their per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for first-timers, you skip the city driving on Route 176 and IL-12 entirely.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.morainehills.htmlHow do mileage limits work and where can I drive on a road trip from Island Lake?
Hosts set their own mileage policies on RVezy, and many Island Lake listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering an RV rental with unlimited mileage, a great pick for longer hauls. From Island Lake you're perfectly positioned: Starved Rock State Park is about 90 miles southwest (1 hour 45 minutes), Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is just 30 miles north, Galena's historic district sits 130 miles west, and the Indiana Dunes National Park is about 90 miles southeast. A classic RV road trip from Island Lake also runs north into Wisconsin's Door County, around 230 miles. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're chasing fall colors up the Wisconsin shoreline.

Winters are cold (lows often in the teens with snow), but many local hosts list four-season rigs for ice-fishing trips. Yes, traveling across U.S. state lines from Island Lake is allowed on RVezy, and it is one of the best parts of an Illinois RV trip. Popular routes head north to Wisconsin (Lake Geneva, Wisconsin Dells, Door County), east to Indiana Dunes National Park, or west to Iowa's Mississippi River bluffs. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection setup, so message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a 5-day loop through southern Wisconsin from Island Lake hits three state parks in under 300 miles.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel cost and MPG like for an RV trip from Island Lake?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think for an RV rental Illinois trip out of Island Lake. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 16 to 20 MPG for Class B campervans, and 12 to 18 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Illinois gas prices typically run a bit higher than the national average because of state fuel taxes, so plan around $3.50 to $4.25 per gallon for regular and slightly more for diesel. Pro tip: fill up across the Wisconsin border just north of Antioch (about 15 miles from Island Lake) where fuel taxes are lower, you can save $5 to $10 per tank.

Avoid I-90 inbound to Chicago between 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., and skip downtown Chicago entirely (low bridges and 13-foot clearances make it a no-go for larger rigs). Watch for deer at dawn and dusk near wooded stretches by Volo Bog, and in winter expect possible lake-effect snow squalls. Pro tip: pick up your rental and head straight north on US-12, you'll be at Chain O'Lakes State Park in 25 stress-free minutes.

The deposit is released after the trip once the host confirms everything looks good, typically within 7 days. Yes, winter RV camping near Island Lake is doable and surprisingly magical, think ice fishing on Bangs Lake, snowshoeing at Moraine Hills State Park, and bald-eagle watching along the Fox River in January. Several RVezy hosts in McHenry County list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built for cold nights (January lows in this part of Illinois often dip into the teens F). Book a site with electric hookups so you can run a space heater alongside the furnace, and ask the host about a heated water hose.
