Camping near Kincaid, Illinois
Kincaid sits in Christian County in central Illinois, roughly 20 miles southeast of Springfield and just south of Sangchris Lake. The village works well as a base for RV travelers combining lake recreation with Springfield's Abraham Lincoln historic sites, and it puts campers within easy reach of Interstate 55 and Illinois Route 104.
The closest public camping is at Sangchris Lake State Park, where Hickory Point Campground sits near the east boat dock. Nearby private options include Springfield KOA Journey in Rochester, Double J Campground and RV Park, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Country Bend Campground. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park lakeside sites and full-service private RV parks.
Terrain in the area is gently rolling farmland and mixed hardwood along the lakeshore, with mostly level pull-through and back-in RV sites at the private parks and gravel or grass sites at the state park. Cell service is fair in the area, and grocery, fuel, and dump stations are available within a short drive.
Things to do near Kincaid
Sangchris Lake is the local draw. Designated as a State Fish Preserve in 1972, Sangchris Lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel and flathead catfish, bullhead, and carp, with public boat access from both shores and shoreline fishing throughout. Boating, kayaking, and pontoon outings dominate summer weekends, and self-serve kayak rentals are available from a kiosk at the east boat docks.
On land, the park offers equestrian trails, shorter hiking paths, an archery range, and seasonal hunting areas. Wildflowers show in spring and summer, and oak and maple color peaks in fall.
Day trips from Kincaid reach downtown Springfield in about 30 minutes for the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln's Tomb, and Route 66 stops.

Peak camping runs from late April through October. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for the lake, but also afternoon thunderstorms and occasional severe weather; central Illinois sits in an active tornado corridor, so a weather radio in the RV is worth packing. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first at Sangchris Lake and the Springfield KOA Journey.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. At Sangchris Lake State Park, water facilities including the shower building are closed the Monday prior to Thanksgiving through March 31st. Hickory Point and Deer Run are closed the second week in January through March 31st, so plan winter stays around those dates.
Private parks like Kamper Kompanion RV Park and Country Bend Campground generally have longer operating seasons than the state park, though many private operators still curtail services in the coldest months.
How to book a campsite near Kincaid
Sangchris Lake State Park reservations for both Deer Run and Hickory Point campgrounds go through the Illinois DNR reservation system. Reservations can be made online at camp.exploremoreil.com or by phone with a credit card for the period of April 1st through October 31st, and some sites remain first-come, first-served. Lakeside sites at Hickory Point book out well in advance for summer weekends.
Springfield KOA Journey in Rochester takes reservations directly through the KOA website or by phone, with a two-night minimum common on major holiday weekends. Double J Campground and RV Park, Kamper Kompanion RV Park, and Country Bend Campground are booked directly with each park by phone or website. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is prudent for July and August.
What to expect on-site
At Sangchris Lake State Park, Hickory Point contains 55 Class A, 10 Class C and two rent-a-cabin sites near the east boat dock. Campground amenities include drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers and a dump station. Sites are largely gravel, generally level, and many sit within view of the water.
Springfield KOA Journey offers tent sites, level pull-through or back-in RV sites, and rustic and deluxe cabins, with a pool, mini golf, bike rentals, and free Wi-Fi. The pool is open from 10 to 8 starting Memorial Day weekend and closing Labor Day weekend, and a KampK9 pet area is on-site.
The smaller private parks nearby generally provide hookups, laundry, and basic camp stores. Leashed pets are welcome at all listed campgrounds.
