Camping near Kingston, Illinois
Kingston sits in rural DeKalb County, Illinois, roughly halfway between Rockford and the northwest suburbs of Chicago. The area is flat farm country crossed by the Kishwaukee River, with a cluster of private RV resorts within a short drive that cater to families, seasonal campers, and travelers passing through on I-39 or I-90.
Most overnight RV options nearby are privately owned resorts rather than state park campgrounds. Sycamore RV Resort and Pine Country RV and Camping Resort are the closest full-hookup options, while Holiday Acres Camping Resort, NorthWoods RV Resort, and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort add lake or river access, pools, and family programming within an hour's drive.
For public land camping, Rock Cut State Park near Loves Park is the closest state-run campground, sitting about forty miles west with two lakes for fishing and boating and trails for hiking and biking through wooded terrain.
Things to do around Kingston
Days out from a Kingston base tend to mix family attractions with outdoor time. The Illinois Railway Museum in Union runs vintage trains on weekends, and Donley's Wild West Town sits next door for younger kids. Anglers and paddlers head to Rock Cut State Park, where Pierce Lake and Olson Lake support fishing, kayaking, and swim beach use in season.
For bigger day trips, Starved Rock State Park is about seventy miles south and known for canyons and waterfalls along the Illinois River. Closer in, Rockford offers Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Nicholas Conservatory, and the Kishwaukee River corridor near Sycamore has quiet county forest preserves for short hikes and picnic stops.

Sites, pools, and activity programming are typically full-service from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, then scale back through October.
Summer is peak. Holiday weekends, especially Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, fill weeks in advance at family resorts like Holiday Acres Camping Resort and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort. June through August bring the highest rainfall and frequent strong thunderstorms, and northern Illinois sees regular severe weather including tornadoes and occasional derechos, so watching NOAA alerts matters.
Shoulder-season camping in late April, early May, and September is quieter and cooler, with fall color peaking in mid-October. Winter camping options are limited: most private resorts close water systems after the first hard freeze, and state park campgrounds shift to reduced or no services from November through March.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. How to book a site
Private resorts near Kingston take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most also list availability on aggregators like Campspot, Good Sam, and RoverPass. For summer weekends, booking three to eight weeks ahead is standard, and holiday weekends often require longer lead times plus a two or three night minimum stay.
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Rock Cut and Starved Rock, are reserved through the ExploreMoreIL system operated by the Illinois DNR. Sites open on a rolling six-month window, and popular loops at Starved Rock can sell out quickly for summer weekends.
RV renters should confirm rig length limits, pull-through versus back-in orientation, and whether 30-amp or 50-amp service is available before booking, since older loops at some parks favor shorter rigs.
What to expect on site
Private resorts in the Kingston area lean toward full-service: paved or gravel pads, water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric, Wi-Fi of varying quality, and amenity buildings with laundry and showers. Family resorts such as Pine Country RV and Camping Resort and NorthWoods RV Resort typically add pools, playgrounds, and weekend activities during peak months.
Expect farmland and river-corridor surroundings rather than deep woods. Sites are generally open with scattered mature trees, so shade varies. Cell service is reliable on major carriers, and grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easy to reach in Sycamore, DeKalb, and Belvidere.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from May through September, so bring repellent, and campfire rules vary by property with burn bans possible during dry stretches.
