Campgrounds and RV parks near Kinmundy, IL

The lake at Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area is the recreational hub. Anglers fish for largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie, swimmers use sandy Rocky Point Beach, and the day-use areas offer softball, volleyball, and water skiing. Hiking is easy and family-friendly. There are four established nature trails: the Oak Ridge Trail is a 2.5-mile loop in the campground, the Marlow Pond Trail is a half-mile, the Henneman Trail runs a quarter-mile to an early settlement cemetery, and the Phillips Creek Trail is a quarter-mile with lake access. Equestrians will find a 15-mile horse trail that circles the lake, open May 1 to November 1. Hunters have access to over 2,000 acres of park land, primarily for dove and squirrel in season.

The Illinois state-park camping season is built around warm weather. Most Illinois DNR campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31, though some parks accept year-round reservations, so travellers should verify a specific site before planning a shoulder-season trip. Summer is peak, with warm, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day fill fastest. Reservations for Memorial Day, Fourth of July (when July 4th falls on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday), and Labor Day weekends require a two-night minimum in most cases, so plan accordingly. Spring and fall offer cooler nights, lighter crowds, and good fishing, but travellers should check park status before arriving. Infrastructure work has closed access at Stephen A. Forbes in the past, including a bridge replacement project on the only access road to the Oak Ridge Campground as part of a larger road improvement project. Winter camping in the area is limited and weather-dependent, with cold snaps and occasional snow.

Oak Ridge is a modernized lakeside campground with shade and lake access. There are 115 shaded campsites with electricity, water, and a shower building, two sets of stairways and a boat dock provide access to the lake, and a 120-foot floating walkway connects the campground to the marina area. Sites accommodate typical Class C and travel-trailer rentals, though large Class A rigs should confirm site length before booking. Access and facilities were recently upgraded. The aging structure locally known as Thunder Bridge was replaced with a modern three-span bridge, and additional improvements included a precast box culvert, resurfacing of primary and secondary park roads, parking-lot upgrades, culvert replacements, new lighting, park signage, and guardrail installations. Cell coverage is spotty in the wooded areas, groceries and fuel are available in Salem and Kinmundy, and quiet hours are enforced.
