Camping near Kirkland, Illinois
Kirkland sits in DeKalb County in northern Illinois, roughly 25 miles east of Rockford and about 65 miles west of downtown Chicago. The surrounding landscape is flat farm country cut by the Kishwaukee River, and most RV camping options lie in a 30-minute to one-hour arc around town rather than in the village itself.
Private resorts anchor the closest options. Pine Country RV and Camping Resort in Belvidere is a Thousand Trails property positioned as a stopover or destination base within minutes of Rockford. Holiday Acres Camping Resort, Sycamore RV Resort, NorthWoods RV Resort, and Blackhawk Valley Campground round out the private options in the surrounding area.
Public land is close as well. Rock Cut State Park, about 30 miles northwest of Kirkland, has a large campground with electric sites, a rustic cabin, and shelters bookable through ExploreMoreIL. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area sits southeast off U.S. 30 with 1,550 acres of rolling prairie and a 318.8-acre man-made fishing lake.
Things to do around Kirkland
Fishing drives much of the local activity. Shabbona Lake is a well-known fishery with a history of state-record muskies, and boat, pontoon, kayak, and paddleboard rentals are available on-site. Swimming and wading are prohibited at Shabbona Lake, so plan on a rental boat or shoreline casting instead of a swim.
Hikers head to Rock Cut State Park, which offers roughly 40 miles of hiking trails alongside mountain biking and equestrian routes. Pierce Lake anchors fishing and paddling inside the park, and Olson Lake has the designated swimming beach.
Families staying at private resorts get pool time, playgrounds, and organized weekend activities. Day trips reach the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, downtown Rockford's Anderson Japanese Gardens, and the Boone County Fair in Belvidere in late summer.

The prime RV window runs from mid-April through mid-October. Most private parks in the area operate on an April-to-October calendar, while some state park campgrounds, including Rock Cut, technically remain open year-round for camping.
Summer is the busy season. Weekends fill first, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. IDNR requires a two-night minimum for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and for the Fourth of July when it falls on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday. Book several weeks ahead for holiday stays at both state and private sites.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights and thinner services. At Rock Cut, only electricity is available at each site from November through April; there is no dump station or water available during that time. Winter camping is limited but possible at select state parks, with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Rock Cut when conditions allow.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

How to book a site
State park campsites use one system. Online reservations for all IDNR-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website. IDNR reservations are no longer taken by mail or phone. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance and must be booked a minimum of three days before arrival.
Stay limits and fees are consistent across the system. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period. A non-refundable reservation fee plus the full camping and utility fees are due at the time of booking. Some parks accept reservations year-round; check the specific park page on ExploreMoreIL.
Private resorts book directly. Pine Country RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property, so member and non-member terms differ; reserve through the resort or the Thousand Trails site. Holiday Acres Camping Resort, Sycamore RV Resort, NorthWoods RV Resort, and Blackhawk Valley Campground each take reservations directly.
What to expect on arrival
Sites around Kirkland range from full-hookup RV pads at private resorts to Class A electric sites in state parks and more basic tent sites. Expect gravel or paved pads, a picnic table, and a fire ring at most developed sites. Cell coverage is generally strong across DeKalb and Boone counties.
Rules vary by property. State parks enforce quiet hours and campsite occupancy limits. Alcohol is prohibited in the campground at Shabbona Lake, while most private campgrounds permit it. Pets are typically welcome on leash; confirm any breed or length limits with each park.
Come prepared for weather swings. Summer thunderstorms roll through quickly, spring can be muddy, and mosquitoes are active near river and lake sites from June through August. Bring leveling blocks: northern Illinois is flat overall, but individual sites can still slope.
