Camping near Knoxville, Illinois
Knoxville sits in Knox County in west-central Illinois, just east of Galesburg and within easy reach of Peoria, the Quad Cities, and the Spoon River valley. The surrounding countryside is rolling farmland cut by wooded creek corridors, with several state-managed recreation areas and private RV parks within a short drive of town.
RV travelers have a mix of options nearby. Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club and Haven Hills Campground & Resort offer private-park amenities close to Knoxville, while Shady Lakes RV Resort in New Windsor operates as a gated, seasonal lakeside property to the north. For a state-park experience, Woodchuck Ridge at Jubilee College State Park lies southeast toward Brimfield, and Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area sits north near Kewanee.
Most campgrounds in the area accommodate travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class A and Class C motorhomes, with a combination of electric state-park sites and full-hookup private parks.
Things to do around Knoxville
Outdoor activity centers on the region's state parks and lakes. Jubilee College State Park has more than 40 miles of multi-use trails winding through woodland, hills, ravines, and prairies, shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, plus limited fishing in Jubilee Creek and two small ponds. Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area is built around 58-acre Johnson Lake, which has boat rentals, no-wake boating, kayaking, and a stocked fishery, along with the historic Ryan's Round Barn.
Off-site, day trips reach the historic downtowns of Galesburg and Knoxville, the Carl Sandburg birthplace, Wildlife Prairie Park west of Peoria, and the Spoon River drive in October.

The main RV season in west-central Illinois runs from mid-April through late October. Woodchuck Ridge at Jubilee College State Park operates its main campground facilities from April 15 to November 1, with the Coyote Cove loop kept open for winter camping on Class B electric sites. Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area is open year-round for camping, but water, showers, and the dump station only operate from May 1 to November 1, so cold-weather stays are dry.
Summer is the busiest stretch, especially on holiday weekends and during Peoria-area events, when private parks such as Haven Hills Campground & Resort and Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club book up well in advance. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations.
Winters are cold and can bring heavy snow across Knox, Peoria, and Henry counties, and equestrian trails at Jubilee are closed to horses and bikes through the winter months.
How to book near Knoxville
Illinois state park sites, including Woodchuck Ridge at Jubilee College State Park and the Chief Keokuk Campground at Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area, are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system. Permits are required and can be obtained from site staff or the campground host on arrival. Equestrian sites at Jubilee are not reservable and use a host or self-pay station.
Private parks such as Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club and Haven Hills Campground & Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Shady Lakes RV Resort is a gated community focused on seasonal sites, so contact the resort directly to confirm availability. For summer weekends and fall-color weekends, book several weeks ahead and confirm rig-length limits and hookup type.
What to expect
State-park campgrounds in the area lean toward graveled pads with electric hookups, shared water hydrants, flush-toilet shower buildings, and a central dump station rather than full hookups at each site. Jubilee College State Park offers Class A electric and Class C sites with showers, plus a trailer dump station. Chief Keokuk Campground at Johnson-Sauk Trail has 70 electric sites and 25 tent-only sites, with a maximum RV length near 40 feet on many pads and fair cell service in the area.
Private parks near Knoxville run larger and provide full 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site, with pull-throughs, laundry, Wi-Fi, and family amenities. Leashed pets are welcome at all five listed campgrounds.
