Camping near Lacon, Illinois
Lacon sits on the east bank of the Illinois River in Marshall County, roughly halfway between Peoria and the LaSalle/Peru area. The area mixes river-bottom state land with private RV resorts and primitive canal campgrounds a short drive north.
Closer to town, Condit's Ranch and Sankoty Lakes offer contrasting experiences. Sankoty Lakes offers a beach pavilion and bath house, RV camping, glamping cabins, ADA-friendly cabins, and a private guest ranch at The 1840 Ranch just a few miles away. North of Lacon along the historic Hennepin Canal towpath, Lock 6 - Hennepin Canal State Trail provides basic first-come, first-served sites for canal-side stays.
South toward Peoria and Bloomington, Timberline Campground and Timberline Campground Goodfield handle larger rigs and families with full-service amenities. Timberline Campground in Goodfield sits between Bloomington and Peoria and offers over 300 sites including full-hookup RV sites, tent camping, and rental cabins.

Summer is peak season. Warm humid days, active river recreation, and full campground programming line up from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and family-oriented parks like Timberline run scheduled weekend events. Daytime highs in July and August typically sit in the mid-80s Fahrenheit with high humidity, which can make midsummer challenging for tent campers. Booking ahead for holiday weekends is essential at private resorts.
Spring and fall are the value windows. Cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong fishing bring anglers to the river backwaters, and bald eagle viewing picks up along the bluffs from late fall through winter. Seasonal flooding can affect river-bottom camping areas during spring thaw and after heavy rainfall, so confirm site status directly with the campground after major storms.
Winter is quiet. A few private parks maintain limited winter availability, but state and canal sites see minimal traffic. Along the Hennepin Canal, most of the towpath is open for snowmobiling once frost and snow depths reach the state's minimum thresholds.
How to book campgrounds near Lacon
Reservation systems vary widely by campground type. Private resorts like Sankoty Lakes and Timberline Campground take online reservations through their own websites or partner platforms, and holiday weekends fill weeks or months in advance. Sankoty Lakes has a limited number of RV sites with large concrete pull-through pads, so summer inventory is tight.
State-managed sites along the Hennepin Canal work differently. The Hennepin Canal State Park is not enrolled in the camping reservation system and does not take camping reservations; camping at the canal is on a first-come, first-served basis. The canal's site security officer makes rounds to each campsite to collect camping fees in person, and campers can pay by cash or check. Arrive early on weekends to secure a spot at Lock 6.
What to expect on arrival
Amenities vary sharply between properties. Full-hookup sites, showers, laundry, and a pool are standard at Timberline Campground, which offers primitive, water and electric, full hook-up, seasonal sites, and rental cabins and trailers. Sankoty Lakes offers upscale RV pads with concrete parking, 30- and 50-amp hookups, sewer pump-outs, cabins, glamping tents, and an on-site restaurant.
Canal and state-area campgrounds are much more basic. Sites along the Hennepin Canal are Class C primitive, with no showers or electricity, and drinking water on the canal is limited to the visitor center area, so bring plenty, especially on hot days. Vault toilets and picnic tables are typical at the lock sites.
Cell coverage is generally workable in the river valley, but trees and terrain create pockets. Plan for occasional freight-train noise near canal and riverfront sites, and pack for mosquitoes in summer near the backwaters.
