Campgrounds near Lakemoor, Illinois
Lakemoor sits in McHenry County in northeast Illinois, minutes from the Fox River and the Chain O' Lakes region, the state park lies in the northeastern corner of Illinois in McHenry and Lake counties, about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and only 4 miles south of the Illinois/Wisconsin border. RV travelers use the town as a base for lake-focused trips: fishing, boating, and beach days on a dense network of interconnected waterways.
The anchor public campground is Chain O' Lakes State Park, which has more than 230 campsites and a youth group camp. Class A-Premium areas at Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den total 151 sites, and three Class B-Premium areas, Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East, add another 87 sites. Turner Lake South is the Class B option closest to the water.
Private options fill in around the state park. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo offers full-hookup RV sites on an 80 acre lake, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation sit directly on the Chain waterways. Kenosha County Fair Association, across the state line in Wisconsin, adds a fairgrounds-style overflow option during busy weekends.
Things to do near Lakemoor
Water is the main draw. The Fox River links the seven lakes that make up the Chain, giving boaters and paddlers a huge connected system. Popular fish in the Chain O' Lakes include bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass, with most fishing done from boats or fishing piers because much of the shoreline is marshy.
On land, Chain O' Lakes State Park has seven picnic areas and four trail systems, including the 2 1/4 mile Nature's Way hiking trail, a quarter-mile accessible trail at Pike Marsh North, 8 miles of equestrian trail, and a 6-mile biking and hiking trail. Boat and canoe rentals are available at the park's concession stand.
Family side trips include the Volo Auto Museum near Fish Lake Beach, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, and the Lake County Forest Preserves for shorter hikes and paved bike paths.

Northern Illinois runs on a full four-season calendar, and most private campgrounds work a spring-to-fall window. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort's season runs from May 1 through October 15, with seasonal camping available from April 15 through October 15. Expect similar shoulders at other private parks around the Chain.
Summer is peak. Watersports drive demand, water is warm, and the park can get crowded, with reservations at nearby RV parks harder to come by. Because of the Chicago and Milwaukee day-trip pull, summer reservations should be made months in advance. Weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day are the tightest, matching the state park's peak-fee weekends of Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.
Fall brings cooler nights, foliage, and the start of hunting inside Chain O' Lakes State Park. Summer hours run April 1 through October 31, and the park is closed for all activities except hunting from the beginning of November through mid-December. Winter camping is limited; ice skating, snowshoeing, sledding, and ice fishing are popular when the ice thickens, with ice fishing available on the Chain O' Lakes and Turner Lake.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book near Lakemoor
Chain O' Lakes State Park sites, including Turner Lake South, are booked through the state system. Reservations are accepted at ExploreMoreIL or by calling 866-716-6550, and youth group sites must be booked through the park office at 847-587-5512. The maximum stay at campsites is 14 nights in a 30-day period, and a responsible adult 18 or older acquiring the permit must have a camp shelter set up at the time of registration.
Private campgrounds book directly. Fish Lake Beach takes online reservations or phone bookings during business hours. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation handle reservations by phone or website; Kenosha County Fair Association books through the fair office.
For holiday weekends and any waterfront site, book as far ahead as the system allows, and confirm rig length and hookup type before arrival.
What to expect near Lakemoor
Sites near Lakemoor split into two styles. State park sites at Chain O' Lakes lean rustic: Class B-Premium areas like Turner Lake South offer basic amenities close to the water, while Class A-Premium loops at Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den have more developed sites. Gathering of firewood from the park is strictly prohibited, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
Private resorts run fuller-service. Fish Lake Beach has a heated outdoor pool, hot tub, dog park, indoor pickleball court, basketball courts, a softball field, playgrounds, and offers full hookup RV sites, long term RV sites, cabins, and lakefront tent sites.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are active in summer near the marshes and lotus beds. Cell coverage is generally strong. There is no charge to launch boats at the park and no horsepower limitation on Chain boats, though electric trolling motors only are allowed on 44-acre Turner Lake.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lakemoor, IL?
RV rental in Lakemoor is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Chain O'Lakes region, with most travel trailers running about $90 to $160 per night and Class C motorhomes typically $175 to $275 per night on RVezy. Campervans and Class B rentals usually fall between $150 and $230 nightly. To score a cheap RV rental in Lakemoor, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), avoid the Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends when Chain O'Lakes State Park raises campsite fees to $35, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: shoulder-season trips in late September deliver gorgeous Fox River foliage at the lowest rates of the year.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lakemoor?
Good news: for the vast majority of RVs you can rent on RVezy in Lakemoor, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois only requires a non-commercial Class C or B license once a single motorhome's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeds 16,000 pounds, and almost every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome on the platform comes in well under that. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license and you're set to roll toward Chain O'Lakes State Park.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/classifications.htmlIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip in Lakemoor?
Yes, every RV rental in Lakemoor booked through RVezy includes a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of the driveway with real peace of mind. You choose your renter protection level during checkout (not the host), and the plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on Route 12 heading to Fox Lake or a battery dies at your Chain O'Lakes campsite, one call to the RVezy roadside team gets help dispatched. Review the full coverage details on RVezy's insurance and protection page before you book so you know exactly what is included.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Lakemoor RV rental?
You can book your Lakemoor RV trip with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and the terms are presented clearly during checkout before you pay. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. RVezy also has dedicated processes for host cancellations and for major disruptions, which matters in a region that occasionally sees Fox River flooding. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Chain O'Lakes campsites, knowing the cancellation policy has your back if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my Lakemoor RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Lakemoor is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of dog-welcoming rigs across McHenry and Lake counties. Your four-legged copilot will love it here, too. Chain O'Lakes State Park allows leashed dogs on all trails and campsites, and nearby Moraine Hills State Park has more than 10 miles of crushed-limestone trails perfect for a morning walk. Stearns Woods and Petersen Park in McHenry are also leash-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and breed details, then pack a long leash since Illinois state parks require pets to stay tethered at all times.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Lakemoor?
Yes, RV delivery in Lakemoor is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to Chain O'Lakes State Park, Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, your home driveway, or a nearby Fox Lake campsite, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on the listing page to see who offers it and how far they will travel. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so booking a host based in McHenry, Volo, or Fox Lake keeps costs low.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.chainolakes.htmlHow far can I drive on a Lakemoor RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of range to play with on a Lakemoor RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrade for a flat daily fee, which is a smart pick if you're heading out of state. From Lakemoor you can reach Lake Geneva, WI in about 35 miles, Milwaukee in roughly 75 miles, Indiana Dunes National Park in about 100 miles, Starved Rock State Park in around 95 miles, and Galena in about 140 miles. Check the mileage policy section on each listing before booking. Pro tip: estimate your total round-trip miles, then choose the package that beats per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakemoor%2C%20IllinoisWhere are the best campgrounds near Lakemoor for RV camping?
You're surrounded by excellent RV camping near Lakemoor. Chain O'Lakes State Park in Spring Grove (about 12 miles north) has 230+ sites including the popular Honeysuckle Hollow and Fox Den electric loops, with Class A-Premium sites at $25 per night and primitive sites at $12. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in McHenry offers full hookups right on Pistakee Lake. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo (10 minutes away) features a sandy beach and pull-throughs. Blackhawk Valley Campground near Rockford and KOA Holiday in Union are great backup options. Pro tip: Chain O'Lakes sites release on ExploreMoreIL six months out and the lakefront loops fill within minutes for summer weekends.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Lakemoor, IL?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Illinois around Lakemoor, with daytime highs typically in the 70s to mid 80s F and warm Chain O'Lakes water perfect for swimming and boating. June and September are the smartest months: fewer mosquitoes, lower rates, and beautiful green or golden scenery. July brings the busiest weekends and Fourth of July fireworks on the Chain, while October delivers stunning Fox River foliage with crisp days in the 50s and low 60s F. Winters are cold with January lows often in the teens F and frequent snow, so most RV camping wraps up by late October. Pro tip: book a mid-September trip for great weather and smaller crowds.
weather.gov/lot/I have never rented an RV before, will I actually be okay driving one around Lakemoor?
Yes, and Lakemoor is honestly one of the easier places in Illinois to get comfortable behind the wheel of an RV. The roads around town (Route 120, Route 12, and Wilmot Road heading to Chain O'Lakes State Park) are wide, flat, and lightly trafficked compared to Chicago. Every RVezy host gives a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, water, propane, and the dump station, so you are never figuring it out alone. First time renting an RV? Pick a Class C or campervan for an easier drive, and consider delivery so your only driving is a short trip to a nearby campground. Pro tip: do a slow loop through the Lakemoor Walmart parking lot before hitting the highway.
idot.illinois.gov/What if something breaks down during my RV trip from Lakemoor?
Take a breath: every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so help is one phone call away whether you're stuck on I-94 near Gurnee or boondocking off Wilmot Road. The roadside team can coordinate tows, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery throughout the US. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy messaging system for quick how-to questions like resetting the generator or relighting the water heater pilot. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, license plate, and engine model at pickup and save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Lakemoor, so you're ready before you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lakemoor RV rental into Wisconsin or other states?
Yes, cross-state road trips are encouraged. From Lakemoor you're only about 8 miles from the Wisconsin border, and RVezy's insurance and protection coverage is valid throughout the US, so Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Door County, and Wisconsin Dells are all easy multi-day options. Popular routes include the roughly 200-mile run up to Devil's Lake State Park and the 350-mile loop to Door County. Travel into Canada may be allowed with advance approval from your host because of insurance considerations, so message them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a 4-day Lakemoor to Lake Geneva to Wisconsin Dells loop is a perfect first RV road trip from Lakemoor.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my RV trip from Lakemoor?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any RV road trip from Lakemoor, but it's predictable once you know the math. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically pull 10 to 14 MPG, and Class B campervans get a respectable 16 to 20 MPG. Illinois gas prices currently run about $3.50 to $3.80 per gallon, slightly higher than Wisconsin just across the border, so fueling up in Genoa City or Twin Lakes, WI can save real money on longer trips. Pro tip: a typical 4-day trip from Lakemoor to Starved Rock and back (around 200 miles total) costs $70 to $90 in fuel for a Class C.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lakemoor?
Reserve as early as you can for the best pick. Chain O'Lakes State Park takes reservations through the Reserve America Illinois system, and the waterfront electric sites disappear quickly for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Private parks like Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort and Fish Lake Beach typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for summer Saturdays. For midweek trips in June or September you can often find space 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: if Chain O'Lakes is full, check back regularly for cancellations, which happen daily as plans shift.
reserveamerica.com/explore/chain-o-lakes-state-park/IL/521/overviewWhat are the local driving conditions like around Lakemoor?
Driving an RV in the Lakemoor area is refreshingly low-stress most of the year. Route 120, Route 12, and Wilmot Road are flat, well-maintained two- and four-lane roads with easy shoulders, and the surrounding McHenry and Lake County terrain is gently rolling glacial moraine, no mountain grades or tight switchbacks to worry about. Summer weekends bring boat-trailer traffic near the Chain O'Lakes, so plan pickups for mornings. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from December through March, which is why most RV trips here run April to October. Pro tip: avoid I-94 southbound into Chicago between 6 and 9 AM on weekdays, and take Route 12 to US-14 as a calmer alternative when heading to O'Hare or the suburbs.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lakemoor?
Local campgrounds offer a nice range, so you can dial in exactly the experience you want. Chain O'Lakes State Park's premium Class A loops (Honeysuckle Hollow, Fox Den) have electric hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, a dump station near the entrance, and potable water spigots, but no sewer at the site. Private resorts like Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort and Fish Lake Beach offer full hookups (water, electric, 30/50 amp, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. The closest public dump stations are at Chain O'Lakes State Park and many Mobil/Speedway truck plazas along I-90. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the pickup location since some primitive Chain O'Lakes sites lack on-site spigots.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/park.chainolakes.htmlWhat is included in a typical RV rental from Lakemoor?
You will be impressed by how turnkey a motorhome rental in Lakemoor is. Most RVs come with a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, utensils), a bathroom with toilet and shower, real beds with linens often included or available as an add-on, air conditioning, furnace heat, a TV, and seatbelted seating for everyone listed on the booking. Many also include a generator, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and a Bluetooth speaker. Cellular Wi-Fi can be hit or miss: coverage near Chain O'Lakes State Park is solid on Verizon and AT&T but spotty in some Fox River bottomlands. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities list and message the host about anything you can't live without, like a coffee maker or a hitch for bikes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakemoor%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when renting an RV in Lakemoor?
You have great flexibility here. Common add-ons from Lakemoor-area hosts include linen and towel packs (around $25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator usage (often $3 to $5 per hour), portable grills, kayaks, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Mileage policies usually offer 100 to 150 free miles per night with overages around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile, or an unlimited mileage upgrade for a flat daily fee. Pickup is typically at the host's home, but RV delivery in Lakemoor is widely available to Chain O'Lakes State Park, Moraine Hills, and even your own driveway. Return windows are usually mid-morning to early afternoon. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit for a true plug-and-play campervan rental in Lakemoor.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakemoor%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full trip cost (rental, fees, and add-ons) through RVezy's platform when you book using a credit or debit card, so no cash ever changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately by RVezy a few days before pickup and released after your trip, assuming no damage or excessive cleaning. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at pickup and return, document the fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks before drop-off (or pay the dump fee). Pro tip: do the pickup walkthrough video together with your host so everyone is on the same page from minute one.
