Campgrounds near Lakewood, Illinois
Lakewood sits in McHenry County in northeastern Illinois, roughly an hour northwest of downtown Chicago and a short drive from the Chain O' Lakes region. RV travelers use the town as a base for both lake-country recreation and day trips into the metro area, with several established campgrounds within a 30-mile radius.
The closest full-service option is Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union, a family-oriented park with pool, mini-golf, and playground that accommodates rigs up to 50 feet with full hookups, though full-hookup pull-throughs are limited. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offer larger private-resort setups to the north and east, while Grass Lake Marina and RV Park serves boaters on the Chain.
For a state-park experience, Turner Lake South - Chain O Lakes State Park provides Class B-Premium sites inside a park of more than 6,000 acres that borders Grass, Marie, and Nippersink lakes and the Fox River, the heart of Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes.
Things to do near Lakewood
Water recreation drives most trips here. The Chain O' Lakes system offers nearly 6,500 acres of water and 488 miles of shoreline, with boating, fishing, and paddling as the main draws. Anglers target bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, and catfish, and the park concessionaire Gill's on the Chain rents motorboats, rowboats, canoes, and kayaks seasonally.
Land-based options include hiking, biking, and birdwatching on the state park's four trail systems, plus an archery range and seven picnic areas. Families staying at Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday are close to the Illinois Railway Museum and Santa's Village Azoosment Park, and can catch a Metra train from nearby Crystal Lake or Woodstock for a day trip into Chicago.

The park's concession stand operates April through mid-October, and the entire park closes for hunting starting the last weekend of October.
Summers are warm and often humid. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest weather of the year, with May and June averaging the most rainfall, so campers should plan for afternoon thunderstorms. Fall brings cooler nights and clearer skies, with reliable camping weather typically holding through mid-October before the first frost.
Winter is cold and snowy. Ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are offered at Chain O' Lakes when conditions allow, and hunting programs run for dove, waterfowl, archery deer, and permit pheasant. Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

How to book campsites near Lakewood
State-park sites at Chain O' Lakes, including Turner Lake South, are reserved through the Illinois state system at camp.exploremoreil.com or by calling 866-716-6550. Maximum stay is 14 nights in any 30-day period, and a responsible adult 18 or older acquiring the permit must have a camp shelter and set it up at the time of registration.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday takes reservations directly through the KOA website or by phone, and Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park each run their own reservation systems.
Summer weekends fill quickly, especially Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, so book several months out for holiday stays and confirm rig-length limits and hookup type before arrival.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of open, resort-style RV parks and wooded state-park loops. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday offers 30-amp, 30/50-amp, and 50-amp sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups, complimentary Wi-Fi, a pool, playground, mini-golf, and camp store. Rigs up to 50 feet are accommodated, though full-hookup sites are limited.
At Chain O' Lakes State Park, Class A-Premium loops (Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den) provide electric sites, while Class B-Premium areas including Turner Lake South are more primitive. Campers must bring their own firewood; collecting wood in the park is not allowed, and alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds.
Boat launching within the state park is free, and only electric trolling motors are permitted on the 44-acre Turner Lake inside the park itself. Cell service is generally reliable throughout the Lakewood area.
