Campgrounds near Marseilles, Illinois
Marseilles sits on the Illinois River in LaSalle County, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago and directly across the river from Illini State Park. The town is a practical base for RV trips through the Illinois River valley, with public campgrounds, private RV resorts, and easy access to the more famous canyons at Starved Rock State Park roughly 15 miles west.
Illini State Park is the closest public campground and offers tent and trailer sites, some with electric and sanitation service, along the riverbank. Glenwood RV Resort and Mallard Bend RV Resort provide full-hookup private options nearby, while Kayak Starved Rock Campground caters to paddlers on the sandy shore opposite Starved Rock. Pleasant Creek Campground rounds out the area's private options.
The surrounding landscape is flat to gently rolling, sitting near 500 feet in elevation, with the Illinois and Michigan Canal, Marseilles Lock and Dam, and multiple state parks all within a short drive. Barge traffic, bluff-top hikes, and river fishing define the local outdoor experience.
Things to do near Marseilles
Fishing and boating drive most trips. The Illinois River holds crappie, bass, bluegill, catfish, carp, and bullheads, and a boat ramp is available inside Illini State Park. Boaters should watch for barge traffic and stay clear of the Marseilles Lock and Dam.
Hiking and cycling are strong secondary draws. The Illinois and Michigan Canal trail runs close to Illini State Park, and Starved Rock State Park, roughly a half-hour west, is known for sandstone canyons, waterfalls, and spring wildflowers including Virginia bluebells. Bike rentals are sometimes available at Illini State Park through a park concession.
Families also use the picnic shelters, playgrounds, and youth camp area at Illini, and winter visitors sled the park's hills when conditions allow.

The area has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid with daytime highs averaging in the low 80s from June through August, and this is the busiest camping stretch. Weekends and holidays at Illini State Park and Starved Rock fill quickly, so reservations should be locked in well ahead.
Spring brings moderate rainfall and wildflower blooms along the river corridor and inside Starved Rock's canyons. May tends to be among the wettest months, and creek levels can rise fast after storms. Fall is a strong shoulder season: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood foliage including oak, hickory, and maple through the park.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Illini State Park allows walk-in camping outside the peak reservation stretch, which generally runs May through October. Expect freezing temperatures, snow cover, and reduced services at most private RV parks during the coldest months, with Marseilles Lock averaging about 29 days at or below freezing in January alone.

How to book
Illini State Park reservations go through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ExploreMoreIL platform, either online at camp.exploremoreil.com or by phone through the state's reservation call center. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be booked up to six months out. Have preferred dates and site numbers ready, and specify which camping area suits your rig.
Private parks such as Glenwood RV Resort, Mallard Bend RV Resort, Kayak Starved Rock Campground, and Pleasant Creek Campground handle their own bookings directly through their operator websites. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill first, so plan several weeks in advance for summer stays and even earlier for holiday weekends.
What to expect on-site
Illini State Park has multiple camping loops, with a mix of tent-only areas and electric sites suitable for trailers. Modern toilets and showers serve the electric loops, and vault toilets serve the tent zones. Most sites are shaded by mature hardwoods, and some overlook the river and lock. Signage inside the park can be limited, so download a park map before arrival.
Private resorts in the area tend to offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and amenities like playgrounds, camp stores, and dump stations, with varying site sizes. Expect train and barge noise near the river, mosquitoes in summer, and firewood available from vendors close to the park entrance.
