Campgrounds and RV parks near Matherville, IL

The Mississippi River corridor drives most day trips. Families can visit Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley, the Quad City Botanical Center in Rock Island, and Black Hawk State Historic Site, which offers hiking trails and exhibits on regional Native American history. The Rock Island Arsenal and Figge Art Museum in Davenport add rainy-day options. At Rock Island / Quad Cities KOA Holiday, guests have access to lake fishing, a heated outdoor pool, a hot tub, and a water spray park during warmer months. Across the river, Wildcat Den State Park has a trail system leading through sandstone bluffs with named rock formations including Steamboat Rock, Devil's Punch Bowl, and Fat Man's Squeeze, plus the historic Pine Creek Grist Mill, one of the oldest working grist mills in the region.

The camping season in this part of Illinois runs primarily from mid-spring through fall. Illinois state parks split the calendar into Spring-Summer camping from May 1 through September 30 and Fall-Winter camping from October 1 through April 30, with year-round camping weather permitting where buildings, water, and electric remain available. Private RV parks in the Quad Cities area typically stay open year-round, though water hookups and pools shut down once temperatures drop. Across the river, the Wildcat Den campground is closed January 1 through March 31, runs an off-peak window in April, and enters peak season from May through October. Summer weekends and the July 4 and Labor Day holidays fill fastest at both public and private campgrounds. Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong color along the Mississippi bluffs. Winter camping is possible at some private resorts, but expect limited services, potential freezing, and reduced staffing. Spring shoulder season can be wet, with river flooding occasionally affecting low-lying sites.

Terrain around Matherville is gently rolling farmland transitioning to river bluffs and hardwood bottomland along the Mississippi. Expect flat, easy-to-navigate roads and standard Midwestern RV park layouts at the private resorts, with mostly level sites and full hookups at many properties. Public campgrounds trend more rustic. Wildcat Den has non-modern restroom facilities and 28 primitive campsites, so larger rigs should confirm site dimensions before booking. Cell coverage is generally solid near the Quad Cities but can weaken in wooded valleys. Summers are humid with thunderstorms, mosquitoes near water, and occasional severe weather warnings. Firewood should be purchased locally to slow the spread of emerald ash borer and other forest pests, which are established across Iowa and Illinois.
