Campgrounds and RV parks near McLeansboro, IL

McLeansboro sits in Hamilton County in southern Illinois, roughly a half-hour drive east of Rend Lake and Interstate 57. The area is rural, with farmland, oak-hickory woodlands, and small lakes shaping most trip itineraries. Most RV travelers base themselves within a short drive of the Rend Lake corridor, where the largest concentration of full-service campgrounds and public recreation land is located. The closest developed campgrounds include Whittington Woods Campground, Benton KOA Journey, and Wayne Fitzgerrell State Recreation Area. Wayne Fitzgerrell encompasses 3,300 acres of former farmland leased to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, bordering the 19,000-acre Rend Lake reservoir in Franklin and Jefferson counties. Smaller options such as EZ Camp - XXXL Storage and Coy and Wilmas One Stop round out the choices for shorter stays or overflow. Expect a mix of private RV parks with full hookups and state-run electric sites. Rend Lake drives most of the region's fishing, boating, and shoreline camping demand.

State-park sites at Wayne Fitzgerrell use the Illinois DNR reservation system on ExploreMoreIL. Most Illinois DNR campsites can be reserved from May 1 through October 31, with a three-day minimum lead time and a 14-night maximum stay. Some first-come, first-served sites remain at many parks; contact the park directly to confirm availability. Private parks such as Benton KOA Journey and Whittington Woods Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or, for KOA, the KOA app. For holiday weekends, book well in advance. Smaller operators like Coy and Wilmas One Stop and EZ Camp - XXXL Storage are best contacted by phone to confirm availability and rig-size limits before arrival.
