Things to do around Mendon
Fishing and boating anchor most trips in this stretch of the Mississippi corridor. The clear water of Wakonda State Park's six lakes attracts thousands of migratory waterfowl each year, and the lakes offer anglers a chance to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish, with two of the lakes featuring boat ramps. The park also features the state's largest natural sand beach, along with trails and picnicking.
On-site recreation is straightforward at the private parks. Oak Wood Acres runs a 25-by-50-foot pool with a shallow and deep end, a playground, laundry room, and a 5-acre fishing lake surrounded by woods and open grassy areas for games, welcoming campers April through October. Wakonda has five hiking trails that circle several lakes and cross a sand prairie, and mountain biking is permitted on the Agate Lake, Sand Prairie and Quartz Lake trails.
Quincy adds river parks, restaurants, and historic architecture within a short drive.

Camping season in west-central Illinois runs primarily from spring through late fall. Most private parks operate on a defined calendar: Oak Wood Acres welcomes campers April through October, with the pool, playground, and outdoor play open during that window. DRIFTWOOD RV Park operates during the warm-weather months as well, so travelers planning shoulder-season stops should confirm dates directly with the park.
Across the river, Wakonda State Park is open year-round, but the on-season for full services runs April 15 through October 31, when water and showers are available. Off-season stays are possible with reduced amenities. Summer is the busiest stretch as the waters warm through May and June, and fall brings color to the surrounding woodlands, especially in October.
Summer weekends fill quickly at riverside and lakeside sites, so reservations are recommended. Spring and early fall generally offer easier availability, cooler temperatures, and lower bug pressure.
How to book a site near Mendon
Booking channels split by ownership. Private campgrounds in the area typically take reservations by phone or through their own websites and third-party platforms. Oak Wood Acres lists availability through Campspot and its own site, while DRIFTWOOD RV Park asks campers to call or text to inquire about reservations. Lazy Dayz Campground and Bayview Campers Park each handle bookings directly through the campground office.
Wakonda Lake - Wakonda State Park uses the Missouri State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made through the reservation website or by calling toll free 877-ICampMO (877-422-6766). Sites are reservable up to 12 months in advance, weekend reservations require a two-night minimum of Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday, and camping is limited to 15 days within any 30-consecutive-day period. Walk-up use of reservable sites is possible on a day-by-day basis when not booked.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in the Mendon-Quincy area tend to be roomy, with most private parks favoring full hookups on level pads. DRIFTWOOD RV Park offers concrete-pad sites with 30 and 50-amp full hookups and good water pressure. Oak Wood Acres sits just off Interstate 172 outside Mendon, near Casey's, Dollar General, and small local restaurants, and lies about 10 miles north of Quincy for wider dining and shopping options.
Wakonda campers should plan for open terrain. Many campsites sit in open prairie, so full sun in summer is common, and shade is limited. Guests have access to six lakes for fishing and boating at idle speed only, with Wakonda and Quartz lakes featuring boat ramps.
A note on rig routing into Quincy: some maps route through streets that pass under low railroad bridges, so verify a route suited to a tall rig before entering the downtown grid.
