Camping near Mendota, Illinois
Mendota sits in LaSalle County in north-central Illinois, roughly two hours west of Chicago and within easy driving distance of the Illinois River valley. The surrounding farmland and small river towns give RV travelers a base for reaching Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, and a cluster of private campgrounds concentrated along US-52 in Lee and LaSalle counties.
Campground options near Mendota mix state park camping with large private resorts. Nature's Way RV Park offers a quieter, no-frills stop close to town. Woodhaven Lakes, in Sublette, is a private gated camping resort covering 1,756 acres with seven man-made lakes and more than 15 miles of trails, but access is limited to property owners and their guests. Mendota Hills Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: O'Connell's, both near Amboy, focus on family activities with pools or swimming beaches, fishing ponds, and themed weekends. Starved Rock Family Campground puts renters closer to the canyons and hiking on the Illinois River.
Things to do near Mendota
Starved Rock State Park is the main draw. Its trail system leads to sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls that run hardest in spring, and Illinois River overlooks, with a year-round visitor center at the lodge. Matthiessen State Park, just south, adds more canyon hiking and a dells area with waterfalls and a footbridge over the upper canyon.
On the water, the Illinois River offers fishing, kayaking, and boating from access points near Utica and Ottawa. Private resorts fill out the family side. Woodhaven Lakes has two pools, a swimming beach, seven stocked fishing lakes, and roughly 15 miles of trails used for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Mendota Hills Campground runs a swimming beach, kayak, canoe, and rowboat rentals, hayrack rides, and themed weekend events including a Sunday frog-jumping contest.

Peak camping season in north-central Illinois runs from May through October, with weekends filling first. Starved Rock State Park's campground is heavily booked in this window, and weekends from May through October are the first to sell out. Spring brings the strongest waterfalls at Starved Rock as snowmelt and rain feed the canyons, but it is also a wet stretch of the year and trails can be muddy.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and the wettest months typically falling in late spring and early summer. This is when private resorts run full activity calendars and pools are open. Fall delivers cooler days, lower bug pressure, and hardwood color through October.
Winter camping is possible but limited. At Starved Rock the West Loop stays open year-round, while the East Loop and youth group area are closed until April 1. Woodhaven Lakes stays open year-round and its trails are used for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling when snow allows.

How to book campsites near Mendota
Starved Rock State Park uses the Illinois Department of Natural Resources reservation system at camp.exploremoreil.com. Sites can be reserved from four days to six months in advance, and reservations cannot be made by phone. Youth group and accessible sites must be booked by calling the park office Monday to Friday. All 129 sites are Class-A Premium with electric hookups only, in 30-amp or 50-amp configurations.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Mendota Hills Campground, Starved Rock Family Campground, and Nature's Way RV Park take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Woodhaven Lakes is a members-only gated resort and does not offer seasonal, weekly, or monthly rentals to the public, so RV travelers generally access it as guests of a property owner. For summer weekends and holiday weeks, book several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, mature oak and hardwood cover at the private parks, and farm country in between. Starved Rock's campground has sites with cement or gravel pads, picnic tables, fire pits with grill grates, and electric-only hookups. There is no sewer at individual sites, but a dump station and water hydrants are located throughout the loop, along with shower houses and porta potties.
Private campgrounds in Amboy and Sublette generally offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, on-site camp stores, dump stations, laundry, showers, and playgrounds. Summer weekends can be busy and social, with golf carts common at the larger resorts, so travelers looking for quiet should ask about site placement when booking.

You can message your host anytime during the trip with questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is just a phone call away. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop in a large open parking lot before hitting I-39.
