Campgrounds and RV parks near Milledgeville, IL

The Rock River is the main draw. Renters fish, paddle, and swim from riverside campgrounds, with Crow Valley Campground sitting directly on a stretch of the river known for its variety of fish species and its stocked serenity pond with benches. Timber Lake Resort and Campground adds two spring-fed lakes, an 1,800-square-foot pool, pedal boat rentals, and summer entertainment at the adjacent Timber Lake Playhouse. Prophetstown State Park has bike paths, a playground, river access, and interpretive signage on regional history. Mount Carroll offers a walkable historic downtown, and the Mississippi River towns of Savanna and Thomson are a short drive west for scenic overlooks and refuge trails. Families traveling with kids can plan pool days, ranger-style walks at Prophetstown, and easy day trips to Palisades-area bluffs along the Mississippi.

The camping season in this part of Illinois is tightly tied to the warm months. Timber Lake Resort and Campground typically operates from mid-April through early November, and Prophetstown State Park runs its campground from May 1 through October 31. Most private RV parks in Carroll and Whiteside counties follow a similar schedule, with Crow Valley Campground taking reservations from mid-April into mid-October. Late spring and early summer bring the greenest scenery and the highest water on the Rock River, but also the wettest weather. Peak family demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when holiday weekends at Timber Lake Resort and Campground and Crow Valley Campground fill well in advance. September and early October are the quietest stretch of the open season, with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong fall color along the river bluffs. Winter closes nearly all campgrounds in the area. The growing season typically runs from late April through the first week of October, which is a practical bracket for shoulder-season trips.

Expect a rural, agricultural landscape with wooded pockets along the rivers. Cell coverage varies. At Crow Valley Campground, AT&T signal has been reported as poor and T-Mobile as fair, so travelers relying on connectivity for work should plan around it. Sites at private parks are generally level with full or partial hookups. Timber Lake Resort and Campground offers concrete pad sites with full hookups and mature tree cover, while Prophetstown State Park is more rustic, with water hydrants and vault toilets located throughout the campground and a dump station near the exit. RV renters should arrive with fresh water and be ready to use the dump station on departure. Mosquitoes and biting flies appear near the river in midsummer. Bring bug spray, layers for cool evenings, and firewood purchased locally to comply with movement restrictions.
