Campgrounds and RV parks near Mitchell, IL

The area is oriented around St. Louis attractions and the Mississippi River corridor. Horseshoe Lake State Park surrounds a large natural oxbow lake, and the park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Boat motors of up to 50 horsepower are permitted on the lake, and no swimming or jet skiing is allowed. Cyclists can pick up the regional trail network directly from the park. Connections run to Madison County Transit's Schoolhouse Trail, which links to over 85 miles of bike trail in Madison County, with a route continuing all the way to downtown St. Louis after crossing the Mississippi on the Chain of Rocks Bridge. Across the river, families reach the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Zoo, and Forest Park within a short drive. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site sits just south of Mitchell.

The Mitchell area has a true four-season climate. Its position in the middle latitudes allows the area to be affected by warm moist air from the south as well as cold air masses from Canada, producing a wide variety of weather. Spring is the wettest stretch and delivers the highest severe-weather risk, with thunderstorms normally occurring on 40 to 50 days per year, some of them severe and producing large hail and damaging winds. Summer is hot and humid. Records indicate that temperatures of 90 degrees or higher occur on about 35 to 40 days per year, and extremely hot days of 100 degrees or more are expected on no more than five days per year. Fall usually brings the most stable RV weather in the region, with drier air and cooler nights. Seasonal closures affect the state park side. The Horseshoe Lake State Park campground is open from May 1 to September 30, campers can stay a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period, and reservations are not taken for individual sites. Access to Chouteau Island and the campground has been closed for causeway and bridge work, so confirm current status with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before planning a stay.

Commercial parks near Mitchell are highway-close and convenience-focused rather than scenic. The KOA sits just off I-270, which is ideal for a fast in-and-out but means some road noise. Sites at Cahokia RV Parque tend to be gravel back-ins and pull-throughs set close together, with a shuttle service to St. Louis available. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park is an RV-only park with paved, pull-through, full-hookup sites accepting big rigs, with 30/50-amp service, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and it operates roughly April through September. Safari RV Park is a smaller neighbor with similar full-hookup service. Horseshoe Lake State Park is a different experience. The campground has single-family sites for tents, trailers and RVs with a table, fire ring and grill at each site, drinking water, vault toilets and a dump station, and no showers or hookups.
