Morrison sits in Whiteside County in northwest Illinois, roughly 100 miles west of Chicago, with the Rock River corridor, Lake Carlton, and rolling farmland shaping the local camping options. RV travelers use the town as a base for state park campgrounds, private RV resorts, and river-access sites within a short drive.
The closest state park option is Morrison-Rockwood State Park just north of town, which offers 92 electric sites in heavily wooded loops around Lake Carlton. A short drive south, Prophetstown State Park anchors the Rock River shoreline with additional electric sites and a boat dock. Crow Valley Campground near Sterling and Timber Lake Resort and Campground round out the mix with private full-hookup and family-resort formats.
Spring Lake Campground and Crystal Lake RV Park add lake-oriented private options for travelers wanting fishing, swimming, and longer stays. Together these campgrounds give RV renters a range of experiences, from quiet state park loops to activity-heavy private resorts, all within about a 30-minute drive of Morrison.

The Rock River at Prophetstown State Park draws anglers targeting walleye and pike, with a boat dock inside the campground.
Hiking, biking, and paddling fill the rest of the day. How to book campgrounds near Morrison
Illinois state park sites at Morrison-Rockwood State Park and Prophetstown State Park are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL system, which replaced the older Reserve America portal. Morrison-Rockwood has 92 sites with electricity, 59 of which are reservable; Prophetstown offers 43 reservable electric sites. The remaining sites at each park are first-come, first-served.
Illinois opens the reservation window up to 180 days ahead of the arrival date, and bookings must be made at least three days out. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends carry minimum-stay requirements. Private campgrounds set their own booking windows. Crow Valley Campground, Timber Lake Resort and Campground, Spring Lake Campground, and Crystal Lake RV Park all take direct reservations through their operator websites or by phone.
What to expect on-site
State park sites near Morrison are wooded and spacious but rustic. Morrison-Rockwood sites include electricity, a grill, and a picnic table, with a central shower building open May 1 through October 31 and a trailer dump station. Prophetstown offers electric sites with water hydrants and a dump station, though individual sites do not have water hookups and some loops use vault toilets that reviewers describe as strong-smelling in warm weather.
Private campgrounds fill the full-hookup gap. Expect 30/50-amp service, sewer connections, Wi-Fi, laundry, and organized weekend activities at resort-style properties. Cell coverage is generally good across the region on major carriers.
Most RV lengths fit, but tight interior roads and low tree canopy in the state parks favor rigs under 35 feet. Bring bug spray, buy firewood from local vendors to comply with Illinois firewood rules, and pack layers for cool river-valley evenings.
