Mount Morris camping overview
Mount Morris sits in Ogle County in northwest Illinois, close to the Rock River corridor and a cluster of state parks that shape most RV trips to the area. Lowden State Park, located north of Oregon in Ogle County along the Rock River, offers camping and hiking and is home to the iconic Black Hawk statue. Franklin Creek State Natural Area is located in Lee County, northwest of the village of Franklin Grove and east of Dixon, just north of IL Route 38.
Private campgrounds fill in the family-focused, full-hookup end of the market. Lake LaDonna Family Campground and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground both sit near Oregon, while Lake Louise RV Resort operates closer to Byron. Franklin Creek State Natural Area Equestrian rounds out the mix for horse campers.
Expect a mix of wooded state-park sites along the Rock River bluffs and larger private resorts built around swim lakes and family programming. Most RV visitors base out of one campground and day-trip to the others for hiking, the Black Hawk statue viewpoint, and the historic grist mill at Franklin Creek.
Things to do near Mount Morris
The Rock River drives most of the recreation. The picnic areas at Lowden State Park are open year-round and include tables, drinking water, park stoves, outdoor toilets, and litter cans. The park's bluff-top overlook of the Rock River is the signature viewpoint in the county, drawing anglers, hikers, and boaters in warmer months, with cross-country skiing available in winter.
Families with kids tend to gravitate to the private resorts. Lake LaDonna Family Campground operates on 65 acres, featuring a man-made lake with a white sand beach, water attractions including slides and rope swings, and certified lifeguards on duty. Lake Louise RV Resort centers on a spring-fed lake used for swimming and fishing.
The equestrian area at Franklin Creek contains 12 miles of trails developed and maintained by the Rock River Trail and Horseman's Association, with facilities including a picnic shelter, restrooms, drinking water, and an outdoor show area. The reconstructed grist mill is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. from April through early November.

Private campgrounds around Mount Morris run a defined season, typically operating from mid-spring through mid-fall. Lake LaDonna Family Campground and Hansens Hide Away Ranch and Family Campground both close over winter, so trips outside those months rely on state-park sites, which stay accessible longer but with reduced services.
Reservations at Lowden State Park are accepted via ExploreMoreIL from May 1 through October 31, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) require a two-night minimum stay. Maximum stay is 14 nights within any 30-day period. Fall camping is popular for river views once foliage turns, and winter brings quieter primitive use plus cross-country skiing at Lowden.
Equestrian visitors should check dates before arrival. At Franklin Creek, trails and day-use areas close during firearm deer hunting seasons in November, December, and January, and equestrian trails typically close after heavy rains, so a call ahead is worthwhile.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. Josh was fantastic; I appreciate him staying for an hour and showing me around the RV since it was my first time. The RV was exactly as described, and we enjoyed our first family camping trip in it.

We had an excellent experience in Josh’s camper. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with and kept in Prompt communication. Both Josh and RV easy were a pleasure to deal with. The camper was delivered as promised and picked up on time. The camper was as advertised with all the creature comforts of home. We will definitely be looking for Josh’s trailer through RVezy for the Labor Day camping trip next year. 10 out of 10!
