For RV travelers who want to range a bit further, Twisted Oaks at Argyle Lake State Park sits west near Macomb, and Buena Vista Farms Campground offers a smaller working-farm setting on a 130-acre property. Together these five give renters a spread of hookup levels, activity styles, and reservation systems within about an hour of Mount Sterling.

Argyle Lake State Park adds a 93-acre lake with a boat ramp, boat rentals, and rugged foot trails, plus ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter. Weinberg-King State Park Fish and Wildlife Area offers rolling terrain and wooded valleys popular with hikers and hunters.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Mount Sterling. Trees leaf out from late March through May with wildflowers along the wooded ravines at Siloam Springs, and fall color through October pulls in weekend crowds at Argyle Lake. Ticks and mosquitoes are active from spring through early fall, so campers should plan for repellent and daily tick checks after using the trails.
Summer is the peak booking season and can be humid. The pool and water features at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes run during the summer months, and holiday weekends fill fast at state campgrounds. Reservations for Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Fourth of July weekends (when July 4 falls Friday through Monday) require a two-night minimum.
Winter thins the crowds. Siloam Springs stays open year-round, while shower buildings at several state campgrounds close outside the main season; the Twisted Oak shower building at Argyle Lake is open May 1 through October 31. Snow, ice, and unmaintained side roads can affect access on the shoulder months.
How to book campgrounds near Mount Sterling
State-park sites in this area are booked through Illinois DNR's online system. Online reservations for all Illinois Department of Natural Resources-hosted camping, cabins, group camps, and shelters are made through the ExploreMoreIL website, and reservations are no longer taken by mail or phone. Siloam Springs State Park, Weinberg-King State Park Fish and Wildlife Area, and Twisted Oaks at Argyle Lake State Park all use this system.
Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights, and reservations must be made at least three days before the arrival date. Booking opens up to 180 days ahead of arrival. Most campsites are reservable from May 1 through October 31, and some parks accept reservations year-round, so check the specific location page on ExploreMoreIL.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes and Buena Vista Farms Campground are private and book directly through their own websites, with holiday and event weekends filling weeks ahead.
What to expect on-site
Hookup levels vary by site. Siloam Springs offers 98 Class A sites with restrooms, showers and electricity, 84 Class B sites, four hike-in backpack sites, and a group campground. Water is available in the park but not at every individual campsite, so RV renters should top off fresh-water tanks before parking.
Twisted Oak at Argyle Lake has 86 Class A sites with showers and electricity, and the park also has Class B/E electric-only, Class C vehicle-access, and Class D primitive loops with a shared dump station. Weinberg-King offers electric sites and equestrian camping, and campers typically bring their own drinking water.
Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Pine Lakes and Buena Vista Farms provide the fullest RV infrastructure, with water and electric or full hookups plus resort amenities. Cell coverage is spotty in the wooded state parks, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is wise.
