Campgrounds and RV parks near North Utica, IL

Starved Rock State Park is the main draw, with eighteen sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and roughly thirteen miles of marked trails. French Canyon, LaSalle Canyon, and St. Louis Canyon are the most family-friendly routes from the visitor center. The Illinois River lock and dam overlook is a short walk and a reliable spot for bald eagle sightings in winter. Matthiessen State Park, a few minutes south, offers a quieter canyon system, waterfalls, and dedicated equestrian trails accessed from the Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park area. Paddlers launch kayaks and canoes on the Illinois River near Kayak Starved Rock Campground. Downtown Utica adds wineries, a historical museum, and casual dining within walking distance of several campgrounds.

Peak season runs from late April through October. Spring brings the strongest waterfall flow in the canyons and moderate temperatures, but trails can be muddy and canyon floors may close temporarily after heavy rain or flooding along the Illinois River. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm humid days, full campgrounds, and weekend crowds on the main trails; midweek stays are noticeably easier to book. Fall is widely considered the best window for RV travel in the area. Foliage peaks in mid to late October, temperatures drop into comfortable hiking range, and bug pressure fades. Weekends in October sell out early at both private parks and the state park campground. Winter operations vary. Starved Rock State Park stays open for day use and hosts eagle-watching events in January and February, and the state campground remains open year-round, though the east loop and youth group area are closed until April 1. Private RV parks in Utica generally offer limited winter availability, and hookups may be shut down when temperatures fall below freezing.

Roads into Utica from Interstate 80 are paved and RV-friendly, but the final approaches to state park campgrounds include tight turns and low tree canopy. Larger Class A rigs should scout entrances before committing. Private parks such as Starved Rock Family Campground and Nature's Way RV Park typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, and Wi-Fi of varying reliability. The Starved Rock State Park campground has a dump station at the entrance, water hydrants throughout, two shower houses with flush toilets, and a seasonal camp store open roughly May through October. Cell coverage is generally solid in Utica and patchy in the canyons. Expect crowded trailheads on weekends, limited parking at the Starved Rock visitor center after mid-morning, and strict rules on pets, alcohol, and off-trail hiking inside both state parks. Firewood should be purchased on site to prevent pest transport.
