Campgrounds and RV parks near Oakwood Hills, IL

Oakwood Hills is a small village in McHenry County, Illinois, tucked between Crystal Lake and Cary, with the Fox River passing about a mile to the east. The location puts RV renters within a short drive of the Chain O' Lakes region, one of the densest concentrations of natural lakes in the state, and roughly an hour from downtown Chicago. Most nearby camping clusters around the lakes and the Fox River corridor. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo is the closest full-service private option, while Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park anchors the public-land side. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation sit along the water for boat-in access, and Kenosha County Fair Association offers additional sites a short drive north across the Wisconsin state line. The state park and adjoining conservation area cover more than 6,000 acres in northeastern Illinois, about 60 miles northwest of Chicago and roughly 4 miles south of the Wisconsin border. That proximity to two metro areas keeps summer weekends busy and makes early booking important.

Public and private sites use different systems. Camping reservations for Chain O' Lakes State Park, including Turner Lake South, are accepted through ExploreMoreIL or by phone at 866-716-6550, and youth group sites are booked through the park office at 847-587-5512. The park has Class A-Premium loops at Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den, plus Class B-Premium areas at Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East. Private resorts such as Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort book directly through their own website or by phone, and most enforce a two-night minimum on weekends. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation take reservations directly as well. Kenosha County Fair Association sites, across the state line in Wisconsin, are booked through the fair association and can fill quickly during event weekends. Confirm rig-length limits before booking any site.
