Campgrounds near Oglesby, Illinois
Oglesby sits in LaSalle County in north-central Illinois, at the doorstep of two of the state's most-visited parks. Matthiessen State Park is located in LaSalle County, approximately four miles south of Utica and three miles east of Oglesby, and Starved Rock State Park lies just to the north across Route 178. Both parks are known for sandstone canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and hardwood forest along the Illinois River bluffs.
The area draws heavy weekend traffic from Chicago, roughly two hours east, so RV travelers should treat it as a reservation-first destination. The state campground inside Starved Rock fills months in advance during the warm season, and private parks nearby follow the same pattern on summer and fall weekends.
Options range from the state-run campground at Starved Rock State Park to private RV parks with full hookups, plus a small first-come equestrian loop at Matthiessen State Park. Named nearby options include Equestrian - Matthiessen State Park, Starved Rock State Park, Pleasant Creek Campground, Starved Rock Family Campground, and Nature's Way RV Park.
Things to do near Oglesby
Hiking is the anchor activity. Starved Rock has more than 13 miles of wooded trails that access waterfalls, overhangs, and overlooks along 18 sandstone canyons formed by glacial runoff. Popular routes lead to St. Louis, Wildcat, and French canyons. Matthiessen offers a different pace, with 5 miles of well-marked hiking trails plus 9 miles of multi-use mountain bike and horseback riding trails.
Waterfalls are seasonal, running strongest in spring and after heavy rains. In winter, freeze-thaw cycles create ice formations along the canyon walls, and cross-country skiing is permitted on about 6 miles of trails at Matthiessen when snow cover allows.
Beyond the parks, visitors can paddle the Illinois River with local kayak outfitters, tour the historic Starved Rock Lodge, or drive the I&M Canal corridor for small-town shops in Utica, LaSalle, and Peru.

Peak camping runs from late spring through mid-fall. The Starved Rock campground fills quickly every year, and the park recommends placing reservations six months before the intended arrival date. Weekends from May through October fill first, and October weekends are especially busy for fall color along the canyon rims.
Spring brings the most reliable waterfall flow along with muddy trail conditions. The equestrian campground at Matthiessen operates on a fixed season: the horseback campground opens May 1 (weather permitting) and closes by November 1, while the multi-use trails stay open through the second weekend of November. Trails are closed to horseback riding for at least 24 hours after rainfall.
Winter camping is possible at Starved Rock. The West Loop is open year-round, while the East Loop closes the weekend before Thanksgiving through April 1. Private parks vary, with pool amenities and camp stores typically running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Expect cold nights, ice on canyon trails, and limited services in January and February.
How to book a campsite near Oglesby
Reservations at the Starved Rock State Park campground go through the state's ExploreMoreIL system at camp.exploremoreil.com. Bookings can be made from four days up to six months in advance. Reservations cannot be made online within two days of the arrival date; that window becomes walk-in, first come, first served at the campground. Reservations cannot be made over the phone, except for handicap-accessible and youth group sites, which require calling the park office.
The Matthiessen equestrian loop works differently. Sites are first come, first served, and reservations cannot be made through the park or online. Campers complete a registration envelope at the campground and drop the fee in the on-site box.
Private campgrounds such as Pleasant Creek Campground, Starved Rock Family Campground, and Nature's Way RV Park take direct bookings through their own websites and phone lines. Book summer weekends and any October date well ahead.
What to expect on-site
The Starved Rock state campground has 133 Class-A premium sites, all with electric hookups. Sites offer 30-amp service, with a limited number of 50-amp sites for larger rigs; 30-amp posts also include standard 20-amp outlets. Water hydrants are spread throughout the campground, and there are two shower houses with flush toilets plus porta potties. Sites include a picnic table and a fire pit with a grill grate. There are no individual water or sewer hookups at sites, but a dump station is available.
Private parks lean more amenity-heavy, with full-hookup pull-throughs, 30- and 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, laundry, showers, and dump stations typical at properties such as Nature's Way RV Park and Pleasant Creek Campground. Common rules across the state parks: alcohol is prohibited in the campgrounds and on park trails, pets must stay leashed, and quiet hours run overnight.

dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Oglesby, Illinois?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular Illinois Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Oglesby. There's no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers in Illinois. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most renters are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward it is, so you can focus on packing snacks for the Starved Rock canyon hikes instead of stressing over paperwork.
ilsos.gov/departments/drivers/drivers_license/home.htmlWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Oglesby?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Oglesby through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 71 or a dead battery at the Starved Rock Campground trailhead won't derail your trip. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover damage to the RV during your rental. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides real peace of mind so you can pull into Matthiessen State Park and focus on the waterfalls, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Oglesby RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy for every reservation (it isn't host-defined), and there's a short money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refunds beyond the grace period depend on how far out you cancel, and special protections apply for circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters, which is helpful in Illinois where spring thunderstorms can occasionally reroute plans. You'll see your specific terms at checkout and in your booking confirmation, so go ahead and reserve that perfect rig for your Starved Rock weekend.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Oglesby?
Absolutely, and Oglesby is a fantastic dog destination. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental Oglesby hosts offer, often with a small pet fee of $25 to $75. Starved Rock State Park welcomes leashed dogs on all 13 miles of trails, including crowd-favorites like St. Louis Canyon and Wildcat Canyon, and neighboring Matthiessen State Park is equally dog-friendly. Just a heads-up: per Illinois DNR rules, pets must stay leashed at all times in the campground and you'll clean up after them. Pro tip: bring booties for hot summer sandstone, the canyons can radiate heat in July.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Oglesby?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to do your first RV trip. Many Oglesby-area hosts offer RV delivery renters love, dropping the rig directly at Starved Rock State Park Campground or private parks in nearby Utica and LaSalle. The host levels it, hooks up electric, walks you through every system, and picks it up at the end, so you never have to back into a site or empty a tank yourself. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it and their service radius. Delivery typically runs a per-mile fee from the host's location, well worth it for a stress-free first time renting an RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oglesby%2C%20IllinoisHow far can I drive from Oglesby on my RV trip?
Plenty of range. Most Oglesby hosts include around 100 to 150 free miles per night, and several offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer routes. From Oglesby you can easily reach Chicago (about 95 miles), Galena and the Mississippi River bluffs (about 110 miles), Springfield's Lincoln sites (about 175 miles), or Indiana Dunes National Park (about 140 miles). A popular RV road trip from Oglesby loops through Starved Rock, Galena, and the Wisconsin Dells. If you go over your nightly allowance, extra miles are typically a small per-mile fee. Message the host through the listing to confirm mileage and ask about multi-night discounts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oglesby%2C%20IllinoisWhere should I camp during my Oglesby RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Oglesby include Starved Rock State Park Campground (133 Class-A premium sites with 30/50-amp electric, a dump station, and shower houses), Hi-Tide Recreation in Utica along the Illinois River, and Illini State Park Campground in nearby Marseilles with riverfront sites. Matthiessen State Park is just 3 miles east for day hiking. Pro tip: Starved Rock fills up fast, especially fall-color weekends in October, so book your site through the Illinois DNR reservation system up to 6 months ahead, which is the maximum window allowed.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/starvedrock.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an Oglesby RV trip?
Honestly, three seasons shine here. Late April through early June is gorgeous, with the canyon waterfalls roaring from snowmelt and spring rains, and daytime highs of 60 to 75°F. Mid-September through late October is the local insider favorite: crisp 50 to 70°F days, fewer crowds midweek, and the Illinois River bluffs ablaze in red and gold. Summer (June to August) runs 80 to 90°F with humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms, but it's prime for kayaking the Illinois River. Winter is quietly magical too: the canyons form ice falls and the West Loop campground stays open year-round for hardy adventurers.
weather.gov/lot/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Oglesby?
You'll be just fine. Oglesby is a small town with wide, easy roads and very little urban traffic, making it one of the friendliest places in Illinois to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and waste systems, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Stick to I-39, I-80, and Route 71 for the smoothest routes, and avoid narrow downtown streets in nearby LaSalle and Peru during weekday rush hour. Pro tip: if you're nervous, book a 24- to 26-foot Class C motorhome rental from an Oglesby host, they drive much like a large van.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/travel-information.htmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering services such as flat tires, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing when needed. You'll have your host's number too, and they know their rig inside and out, so a quick text often solves small issues before they become big ones. RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip. With LaSalle, Peru, and Ottawa all within a short drive of Oglesby, you're never far from a service center, parts store, or a hot meal while help is on the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Oglesby RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to interstate travel. Most Oglesby hosts welcome multi-state trips, and popular routes from here cross into Wisconsin (Lake Geneva is about 130 miles), Indiana (Indiana Dunes about 140 miles), Iowa (Quad Cities about 90 miles), and Missouri (St. Louis about 250 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message them through the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: a Wisconsin Dells loop is one of the most-booked RV road trips from Oglesby, often a 3 to 4 night round trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget for an RV rental in Oglesby?
Easy to plan for. Illinois gas prices often run near the national average, with regular unleaded and diesel widely available in the Oglesby and LaSalle County area. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C motorhome rental Oglesby travelers favor, and 16 to 22 mpg for a campervan rental (Class B). A typical 3-night trip covering around 250 miles often runs in the $90 to $130 range in fuel, depending on current prices and rig size. Fill up at the stations just off I-39 Exit 54 before heading deeper into the Illinois River Valley where stations are sparser.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Oglesby?
The earlier the better, especially for Starved Rock. Illinois DNR opens reservations up to 6 months in advance through the state's online reservation system, and weekends May through October fill first. For a fall-color October weekend, set a calendar reminder for early April. Midweek summer stays often have availability 2 to 4 weeks out. Private parks near Oglesby typically book 1 to 3 months ahead in peak season. Pro tip: if Starved Rock is full, try Illini State Park in Marseilles (about 20 minutes away) or check for first-come, first-served walk-in availability close to your arrival date.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Oglesby?
Generally a dream for RVers. The Oglesby area sits at the intersection of I-39 and I-80 with flat-to-rolling terrain, wide shoulders, and no mountain passes. Route 71 between Oglesby, Utica, and the Starved Rock entrances is two-lane and scenic but can get congested on fall-color Saturdays, so aim to arrive before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms (June to August) and occasional winter ice from December through February. The Illinois River bridges on Route 178 and Route 71 are tall and clear for any standard RV. Pro tip: avoid downtown Utica's narrow Mill Street on weekends, take 178 around instead.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/road-conditions.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Oglesby?
More than enough for a great trip. Starved Rock State Park Campground offers 30-amp and 50-amp electric at every site, a dump station, water hydrants throughout the loops, shower houses with flush toilets, a playground, and a seasonal camp store. There are no individual water or sewer hookups at the sites, so you'll fill your fresh tank at the entrance hydrant. Private parks in the Utica and LaSalle area offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at many sites. Pro tip: top off your fresh water before pulling into Starved Rock, and use the dump station on your way out.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/camp/starvedrock.htmlWhat's included inside an Oglesby RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs in the Oglesby area come fully equipped for RV camping Oglesby trips: a queen or king bed plus convertible bunks/dinettes (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, seatbelts for every traveler, and often a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning. Many hosts include linens, towels, and a starter kit of paper goods. Wi-Fi varies, so cell-tether through Verizon or AT&T works well in this region. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons and message the host to confirm essentials like a generator if you plan to dry-camp.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/rural-broadbandWhat add-ons and pickup options do Oglesby hosts offer?
Lots of ways to customize. Common add-ons for rent an RV in Oglesby bookings include camping chairs and tables ($10 to $25), generators ($25 to $50 per night), kitchen kits ($30 to $75), bedding packages ($20 to $50), bike racks, kayak racks, and propane refill service. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Oglesby, LaSalle, Peru, or Utica, with delivery to Starved Rock or Matthiessen state parks widely available. Mileage policies vary: typical free allowance is 100 miles per night with extras at $0.35 each, and some hosts offer unlimited mileage upgrades. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator into one package if you're new to RVs, it's the smoothest first trip you can plan.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.matthiessen.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Simple and transparent. You'll pay your full booking total through RVezy at checkout using a major credit card, and the platform holds the funds securely until your trip begins. A refundable security deposit (the amount is set by the host and shown at checkout) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not charged, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid holds on the deposit, follow the host's return checklist: refill fuel and propane, empty the black and grey tanks at the Starved Rock dump station, and return on time. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs an Oglesby RV trip good for families?
It's one of the best family RV trip Oglesby options in the Midwest. Kids love the 18 canyons and waterfalls at Starved Rock State Park, the Dells and Cascade Falls at Matthiessen State Park 3 miles away, kayaking the Illinois River with Kayak Starved Rock, and the indoor pool at Starved Rock Lodge. Family-sized motorhome rental Oglesby options sleep 6 to 8 and include bunks, a dinette that converts to a bed, and a full bathroom so you skip the campground showers. Pro tip: pick up s'mores supplies at the Casey's in Oglesby, then book site 76 or anywhere in the wooded 68-128 loop at Starved Rock Campground for the best family vibe.
