Campgrounds and RV parks near Olive Branch, IL

Horseshoe Lake anchors local recreation. The 10,200 acre area includes a 2,400 acre shallow lake, and visitors enjoy picnicking, camping, boating, fishing and hunting, with bald cypress, tupelo gum, and swamp cottonwood surrounding the water. Winter draws bald eagle watchers to the Mississippi River bluffs. Across the river, Mississippi River - Trail of Tears State Park offers hiking, an interpretive visitor center covering the 1838-1839 Cherokee crossings, and river overlooks. Trail Of Tears State Forest lies within the southern Ozark Hills and encompasses just over 5,000 acres, with hiking, horseback riding on designated horse trails, and hunting in season. Day trips reach Cape Girardeau in about 30 minutes for groceries, fuel, and the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail and Shawnee National Forest are within reasonable driving range for longer excursions.

The region has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and muggy, and winters are very cold and wet, with July highs averaging near 88 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. January lows average in the upper 20s with occasional snow or ice. Most private RV parks stay open year-round, but state-managed sites shift services with the season. At Trail Of Tears State Forest, Class C camping sites with vehicle access are closed from December 24 to the second week of May, though Class D backpacking sites remain open year-round. During that window, camping access is by foot only. At Mississippi River - Trail of Tears State Park across the river, the Mississippi River Campground is open year round, while the Lake Boutin Campground operates seasonally. During the off-season from November through March, water is off for full hookup sites and showerhouses are closed, with potable water available from the frost-free spigot at the dump station. Spring brings the wettest stretch and river-level fluctuations, so campers on floodplain sites should watch forecasts. Fall is a strong window for cooler weather, foliage, and lighter crowds.

This is a rural stretch with limited services near the campgrounds themselves. Fuel, groceries, and supplies are easier to find in Cape Girardeau, Missouri or Anna, Illinois than in Olive Branch itself, so RVers should provision before arrival. Cell coverage can be spotty in the state forest and along the river bottoms. At Horseshoe Lake, the campground offers electric hookup sites with some water connections, and a dump station is located down the road. At Trail Of Tears State Forest, large campers are discouraged due to the narrow gravel roads and limited access, and no electrical or water connections are located at the camp sites, although privies, a grill and picnic table are provided. Venomous copperheads and timber rattlesnakes are present in this area, so stay on marked trails. At Mississippi River - Trail of Tears State Park, full hookup sites are narrow but some have Mississippi views, and a train line runs near the park with engine noise and horns common as trains pass.
