Campgrounds and RV parks near Princeton, IL

The Hennepin Canal State Trail is the main draw. The 104.5-mile linear park spans five Illinois counties and offers hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, and horseback riding along an old canal towpath. Bridges and locks built from 1892 to 1907 line the route, and the trail runs from the Illinois River to the Rock River. Fishing is a common reason to stop; the canal is regularly stocked and yields bluegill, crappie, and bass. The equestrian trail on the mainline begins at Lock 2 and ends at Lock 24, with an equestrian campground at Lock 21. In town, Princeton offers historic downtown shopping, the Owen Lovejoy Homestead, and quick access to the Illinois Zephyr and California Zephyr Amtrak routes.

Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window. The surrounding private campgrounds generally run their full-service season across the warm months, and the Hennepin Canal is easiest to enjoy once the towpath dries out and temperatures climb. Summer brings long daylight, warm nights, and frequent thunderstorms, with June and July typically the wettest months. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for towpath hiking and biking. Leaves turn across the canal corridor from late September into October, daytime highs cool into the sixties Fahrenheit, and bug pressure drops. Reservable private parks tend to stay busy on weekends through mid-October, then wind down. Winter is cold and quiet. The Hennepin Canal hosts the longest snowmobile trail in the state at 91 miles on the towpath, opened by site staff only when there are 4 inches of snow on the ground and 6 inches of frost in the ground. Most private RV parks reduce services or close between late fall and early spring, so travelers should confirm dates directly before booking.

Expect a split between rustic public sites and standard Midwestern private RV parks. Lock 6 and the other canal campgrounds are Class C primitive: designated sites, vault toilets at select locks, no showers, and no electricity. Drinking water along the entire canal is limited to the visitor center area near Sheffield, so RVers should arrive with tanks filled. Fires are permitted only in the state-designated fire pits at each campground. The private parks in the area typically offer water and electric or full hookups, dump stations, and basic amenities. Cell coverage along the canal corridor can be patchy, and some sites at Lock 6 sit close to active rail lines, so light sleepers may prefer a private park set back from the tracks. Wildlife is abundant along the canal, with herons, deer, and songbirds commonly seen.
