Camping near Princeville, Illinois
Princeville sits in northern Peoria County in central Illinois, on rolling farmland roughly a dozen miles northwest of Peoria. The immediate area is anchored by Jubilee College State Park, a 3,200-acre facility located in Peoria County between Kickapoo and Brimfield, just off U.S. Route 150. That park is the closest full-service campground option for RV travelers based in Princeville.
Options widen quickly within a short drive. Woodchuck Ridge at Jubilee College State Park offers electric sites suited to RVs, while Sankoty Lakes in Spring Bay, about 20 minutes from Peoria, offers a lakeside resort along the Illinois River with RV sites, glamping tents, and cabins. Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club is a private option with lake access, Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area is a state park option to the north near Kewanee, and Condit's Ranch rounds out the private options in the region.
The terrain is gentle Midwestern prairie and woodland, with creek valleys, small lakes, and hardwood forest rather than dramatic elevation. Trip planning centers on trails, fishing, and easy day drives into Peoria.
Things to do near Princeville
Jubilee College State Park is the primary outdoor draw, with rolling topography and meandering Jubilee Creek and multi-use trails winding through forests, prairies, and ravines. The park also preserves the site of an 1839 Episcopal seminary, giving families a short history stop between hikes.
Water-based recreation clusters at Sankoty Lakes, which has a mile-long trout stream, a swimming beach, kayaking, and stocked lakes. Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreational Area centers on the 58-acre lake with populations of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and channel catfish; only electric trolling motors are permitted on the lake. Ryan's Round Barn stands 80 feet high and 85 feet in diameter, houses agricultural antiques, and is open with limited hours for tours. Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club adds private fishing water, a playground, and rural quiet.

The main camping window for Illinois state parks in this region runs from April 15 to November 1 at Jubilee College, and May 1 to November 1 for full water and shower services at Johnson-Sauk Trail. Reservable state-park sites at Johnson-Sauk (Chief Keokuk Campground, cabin, and Black Hawk Group Camp) are on ExploreMoreIL from May 1 through October 31. Late spring through early fall is the practical prime season.
Winter camping is possible but limited. At Jubilee College, the Coyote Cove loop stays open to winter camping with Class B electric sites and primitive privies, and equestrian sites are self-pay during winter months. Johnson-Sauk Trail does not provide water November 1 through May 1, but the campground remains open during winter for electric or dry camping, and the Chief Tecumseh primitive cabin is available year round.
Summer weekends and holidays fill early at both state parks and at Sankoty Lakes, so mid-week arrivals are easier for walk-up stays. Fall brings oak color and cooler nights well suited to RV travel.
How to book campgrounds near Princeville
Illinois state park sites in the area are booked through the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system. That covers Woodchuck Ridge and other loops at Jubilee College State Park, plus the Chief Keokuk Campground, Chief Tecumseh cabin, and Black Hawk Group Camp at Johnson-Sauk Trail from May 1 through October 31. Permits at Jubilee College can also be obtained from site staff or the campground host.
Equestrian sites at Jubilee College are not reservable; a campground host registers riders, or the sites are self-pay during winter months. Sankoty Lakes, Cabin Fever Campground and Hunt Club, and Condit's Ranch are private operations and are booked directly through each property. Popular summer weekends should be booked several weeks out, especially for electric sites that fit larger rigs.
What to expect on-site
State-park campgrounds in this area are geared to family RV travel rather than luxury. Jubilee College's campground has a shower building with flush toilets, a trailer dump station, graveled pads and grills, water hydrants, and primitive toilets, with electric loops suitable for larger rigs. Chief Keokuk at Johnson-Sauk Trail has 100 sites with 70 electric hookups plus 25 tent-only sites, and water, showers, and the dump station are only open May 1 to November 1.
Max RV length at Jubilee College is around 40 feet. Cell service is fair in the Johnson-Sauk area. Sankoty Lakes runs a tighter, resort-style operation with full-hookup pull-through RV sites with water, sewer, and 30 and 50-amp service, level pads, picnic tables, and fire pits adjacent to Lake Canada, plus an on-site restaurant. Pet policies vary at the private parks, so confirm at booking.
