Overview of campgrounds near Richmond, Illinois
Richmond sits in northeast McHenry County, Illinois, about four miles south of the Wisconsin border and roughly sixty miles northwest of Chicago. The village anchors the western edge of the Chain O'Lakes region, Illinois's largest concentration of natural lakes, making it a practical base for RV travelers heading to water-oriented state parks in both Illinois and southeast Wisconsin.
The closest developed camping is at Chain O' Lakes State Park, which has over 230 campsites across two campgrounds plus a youth group area, with reservations handled through ExploreMoreIL. The park's Class A-Premium areas at Honey Suckle Hollow and Fox Den total 151 sites, and three Class B-Premium areas, Turner Lake South, Prairie View, and Mud Lake East, add another 87 sites. Turner Lake South is the Class B loop nearest the park's 44-acre in-park lake.
Across the state line, Big Foot Beach State Park sits on the shores of Geneva Lake and offers a family campground, a swimming beach, and picnic and playground areas. Additional private and county options in the immediate area include Fox River Recreation, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and the Kenosha County Fair Association grounds.
Things to do near Richmond
Water recreation defines the region. Chain O' Lakes State Park borders three natural lakes, Grass, Marie, and Nippersink, and the Fox River, which connects the other seven lakes that make up the Chain, and the park also contains a 44-acre lake within its boundaries. Anglers target muskie, northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, and seasonal boat, canoe, and kayak rentals are available through the park concessionaire.
On land, the park features seven picnic areas and four trail systems, with the Nature's Way hiking trail running 2 1/4 miles from Oak Grove Picnic Area, an accessible quarter-mile trail at Pike Marsh North, plus 8 miles of equestrian trail across three loops.
At Big Foot Beach State Park, families use the sand beach and hiking trails through the 271-acre park, and when snowfall is sufficient, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking are options. Downtown Lake Geneva, boat cruises, and Kenosha's lakefront are all within a short drive.
