Campgrounds and RV parks near Ridgway, IL

The main draw is the Shawnee National Forest. More than 280,000 acres of forest, prairies, rivers, lakes, and waterfalls support hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and swimming. Garden of the Gods, Rim Rock, and Pounds Hollow are the closest signature stops. At Cave-in-rock State Park, the namesake 55-foot-wide cave carved into limestone bluffs above the Ohio River, along with short bluff-top trails, gives kids a quick history lesson tied to river-pirate lore. The park lodge and on-site restaurant overlook the river and the Cave-in-Rock ferry crossing to Kentucky. Across the river, Harmonie State Park adds paved bike paths, mountain-bike trails, a Wabash River boat ramp, and a seasonal nature center. The Tunnel Hill State Trail, farther west, is a popular crushed-limestone rail-trail ride.

Southern Illinois has a long camping season compared to the rest of the state. Harrisburg, the nearest weather station, has a humid subtropical climate with no distinct dry season, which means comfortable shoulder seasons and hot, humid summers. Peak visitation lines up with spring wildflowers in April and May, then again with fall color in mid-October. Spring is the wettest stretch, and river-adjacent sites at Cave-in-rock and Harmonie can be muddy after heavy rain. Summer brings reliable warmth for swimming and paddling but also heat indices in the 90s and heavier weekend traffic at Garden of the Gods trailheads. Bugs peak from June through August, so screen rooms and repellent are useful. Fall is the sweet spot for RV travel: cooler nights, drier trails, and easier site availability. Winter camping is possible at some private parks and at Cave-in-rock, which operates year-round, though some Forest Service loops close or reduce services from late fall through early spring. Always confirm loop status with the specific park before arrival.

Roads into the Shawnee National Forest are mostly paved two-lanes with some narrow, winding sections near the bluffs. Large motorhomes and long trailers should preview routes to trailhead parking, since some Forest Service pullouts are tight. Cell coverage is spotty inside the forest, so download maps before leaving Ridgway. Cave-in-rock has 34 Class A sites with electricity that can accommodate units up to 60 feet long, plus 25 Class B/S tent sites; showers, restrooms, and dump stations are present in both camping areas. Harmonie's loops are wooded and rolling, so check site grade when booking. Expect ticks and chiggers from spring through early fall. Black bears are not established in the area, but raccoons will investigate unsecured coolers. Firewood should be purchased locally to avoid moving pests.
