Rome camping overview
Rome is a small village in Peoria County on the west bank of the Illinois River, just north of Peoria. RV renters use it as a base for river recreation, forested state land west of the metro, and easy access to I-74 and Illinois Route 29. The surrounding landscape is a mix of river bluffs, oak-hickory woodland, and rolling farm country in central Illinois.
Campgrounds in the area range from full-hookup resort-style properties to state-park sites and rural family campgrounds. Sankoty Lakes sits just east of Rome and offers a modern lakeside setting, while Woodchuck Ridge - Jubilee College State Park provides wooded public-land camping about 30 minutes west between Kickapoo and Brimfield. Timberline Campground and Timberline Campground Goodfield extend options south and east of Peoria, and Condit's Ranch adds a smaller rural option.
Most visitors combine campground time with day trips into Peoria for groceries, fuel, dump stations, and attractions along the riverfront.
Things to do near Rome
The Illinois River corridor is the main draw. Boating, kayaking, and shoreline fishing for catfish, bass, and crappie are common, and boat ramps are available in and around Rome and neighboring Chillicothe. Cyclists ride the Rock Island Trail State Park, a 26-mile rail-trail running from Alta in Peoria County to Toulon in Stark County, passing near several of the campgrounds west of the river.
Guests at Woodchuck Ridge - Jubilee College State Park can hike, mountain bike, or ride equestrian trails through the park's 3,200 acres of rolling woodland. Downtown Peoria adds the Peoria Zoo, Wildlife Prairie Park, the Peoria Riverfront Museum, and the Caterpillar Visitors Center within a short drive.

Central Illinois has four distinct seasons. Peak RV camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks operate at full capacity and Illinois state park sites can book out weeks in advance for weekends and holidays. July and August are the warmest and most humid months, with afternoon thunderstorms common.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable shoulder seasons. April and May bring wildflowers and green-up but also the region's wettest stretch, so lower riverfront and creekside sites can flood after heavy rain. September and October deliver cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong fall color across the oak-hickory forest, and weekends around peak color fill quickly.
Winter camping is limited. Jubilee College State Park's main campground is open from April 15 through November 1, with the Coyote Cove loop kept open for winter electric camping. Water is shut off at most sites to prevent freeze damage, and several private parks close entirely for the season. Renters traveling in the cold months should confirm winter access, electric availability, and dump-station status before booking.
How to book a site near Rome
Illinois state park campgrounds, including Woodchuck Ridge - Jubilee College State Park, are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL portal, which runs on the ReserveAmerica platform. Reservations open on a six-month rolling window, and popular summer weekends often sell out the day they open. A two-night minimum applies on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
Private parks such as Sankoty Lakes, Timberline Campground, Timberline Campground Goodfield, and Condit's Ranch take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For larger Class A or Class C rentals, confirm site length, hookup amps, and any low-clearance approach roads before arrival.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Rome and the surrounding campgrounds are generally paved and RV-friendly, though some rural county routes narrow through farmland and small towns. Cell coverage is reliable near the Illinois River corridor and can drop briefly in wooded sections west of Peoria.
Expect mosquitoes and biting flies near the river in mid-summer, especially at dusk. Ticks are active in wooded parks from spring through early fall. Raccoons are common, so food should be stored inside the rig overnight. Firewood cannot be brought onto IDNR properties from out of state or from quarantined counties, so buy it locally.
Groceries, propane, laundromats, and 24-hour fuel are available in Peoria and Chillicothe, within a short drive of every campground on the list.

dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.woodford.htmlWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Rome, IL?
Late April through mid-October is prime RV season in Rome, with the sweet spot running June through September. Summer highs typically sit in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit, while spring and early fall deliver milder 60s and 70s with fewer mosquitoes and lower nightly rates. Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area's campground operates seasonally, which is a good guidepost for the local season. October is gorgeous along the Illinois River bluffs as the cottonwoods, maples, and oaks turn gold and red. Winters bring snow and lows in the teens, so most local campgrounds close. Pro tip: target the last week of September for warm days, cool nights, and the start of bald eagle sightings over Upper Peoria Lake.

For a typical 4-day trip with 400 miles of driving in a Class C, plan on roughly $150 to $200 in fuel. camp.exploremoreil.com/What are local driving conditions like around Rome, IL?
Driving an RV in and around Rome is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is mostly flat with a few rolling river bluffs, traffic is light outside of Peoria rush hours, and Route 29 along the Illinois River is a scenic, easy two-lane road. Watch for low railroad underpasses in the older parts of Peoria and Chillicothe. Spring brings occasional flooding near the river bottoms, and summer can deliver fast-moving thunderstorms. Winter snow and ice mean most folks park their rigs from December through March. Pro tip: avoid I-74 through downtown Peoria during the 4 to 5 pm rush, take Route 6 around the north side instead.

After your trip, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition (clean, no damage, tanks emptied per host instructions), the deposit is released, usually within a few days. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at both pickup and drop-off, it is the easiest way to make sure your full deposit comes back without any back-and-forth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there RVs available in winter near Rome, IL, and what should I know?
Yes, winter RV rental in Rome is possible, though most local campgrounds close from late October through March. A few RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and upgraded furnaces that handle central Illinois cold snaps, where January lows can drop to the teens. For winter trips, look for RV parks that maintain limited winter electric service so you have shore power. Use a heated water hose, and keep tanks more than half full to help prevent freezing. Winter is also peak bald eagle season along Upper Peoria Lake. Pro tip: ask your host for the cold weather prep walkthrough at pickup, it is worth every minute.
