Campgrounds and RV parks near Rosewood Heights, IL

The area's headline attraction is Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in nearby Collinsville, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where visitors can walk the grounds, climb Monks Mound, and tour the interpretive center focused on pre-Columbian life in the Mississippi valley. Horseshoe Lake State Park offers hunting programs from September through February, fishing from boats and the bank, boat motors up to 50 horsepower on the lake, and no swimming or jet skiing, along with hiking, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Across the river, families can ride the MetroLink to the Gateway Arch, the City Museum, Forest Park, and the St. Louis Zoo. For a shorter outing, the Great River Road along the Mississippi runs north from the Rosewood Heights area toward Alton and Grafton, with river overlooks and small-town restaurants along the way.

The Rosewood Heights area has a humid continental climate with a wide seasonal range. The average temperature of the coldest month, January, is around 0.1 C, the warmest month, July, sits near 26.9 C, and precipitation totals roughly 1,060 millimeters per year, with spring the rainiest season due to clashing air masses and afternoon thunderstorms that continue through summer. Severe weather, including tornado watches, is most common from April through June. Camping shoulder seasons are late April to early June and mid-September through October, when temperatures are comfortable and humidity drops. Summer is peak booking season for private RV parks near St. Louis, especially around Cardinals home stands and holiday weekends, so reserve well ahead. Winter narrows options significantly. State-park camping at Horseshoe Lake closes at the end of September, and only private full-service parks remain open through the cold months. The city normally has 19 days a year when it never warms above freezing, with frosty days most common in January, so renters should confirm winterized hookups before booking cold-weather stays.

Expect a mix of campground styles. The KOA Journey and Cahokia RV Parque are paved, full-hookup parks aimed at travelers passing through on I-270 or I-55/70, with pull-through sites suitable for larger rentals. DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park is an urban park with adult amenities and casino access, best suited to travelers focused on downtown St. Louis. Horseshoe Lake State Park is very different. Primitive, or class C, camping is available from May 1 through September 30, and no showers or electrical hookups are provided. The park accommodates 26 tent or trailer campsites, and a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants are conveniently located. Renters bringing larger rigs to Horseshoe Lake should plan for a self-contained stay: fill fresh water tanks before arrival and use the dump station on the way out.
