Campgrounds near Roxana, Illinois
Roxana sits in Madison County on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, just north of the Chain of Rocks Bridge and roughly fifteen miles from downtown St. Louis. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both metro attractions and the American Bottom floodplain, with several full-hookup parks and a state-park campground clustered along the I-270 and I-255 corridors.
The closest full-service option is the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey, a big-rig friendly park with pull-through sites and full hookups a few minutes off I-270. Public camping is available at Horseshoe Lake State Park, a primitive Illinois DNR site on a large horseshoe-shaped lake in Madison County, though the campground is currently closed for causeway and bridge work. South of Roxana, Safari RV Park, DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park in East St. Louis, and Cahokia RV Parque round out the private full-service choices near the river.
Most private parks in the area stay open year-round, while the state campground normally runs a shorter warm-season window. Travelers typically use these sites as a base for exploring St. Louis and the Metro East.
Things to do near Roxana
The Historic Route 66 Chain of Rocks Bridge crosses the Mississippi as a pedestrian and bike route, and it is a short drive from the St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey. Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, a UNESCO World Heritage location, sits just off I-255 and pairs well with a stay at Cahokia RV Parque or Safari RV Park.
Across the river, families can reach the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis Zoo in Forest Park, the City Museum, Busch Stadium, and the Missouri Botanical Garden within roughly thirty minutes. When it is open, Horseshoe Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing on nearly 3,000 acres, with public hunting programs running from September through February.
DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park places guests next to the Gateway Geyser and MetroLink service into downtown St. Louis.

Late spring through early fall is the main RV season around Roxana. Spring is the rainiest stretch, with clashing air masses and afternoon thunderstorms, and the St. Louis metro sits east of the heart of Tornado Alley, so travelers should watch severe-weather alerts in April and May. Summer is hot and humid, with highs regularly in the upper 80s Fahrenheit and occasional triple-digit days, plus continued thunderstorm activity.
Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground normally operates on a fixed seasonal window from May 1 through September 30, with a maximum stay of seven days in any thirty-day period. Access to Chouteau Island and the state-park campground has been closed for causeway and bridge work, so confirm status with Illinois DNR before planning a stay.
Fall brings cooler nights and lower humidity, and it is generally the most comfortable window for touring St. Louis on foot. Winters are cold with occasional snow, and private parks along I-270 tend to stay open for travelers passing through.
How to book campgrounds near Roxana
Private parks in the area take direct online reservations. The St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app, and pull-through full-hookup sites near I-270 tend to fill on weekends around Cardinals home stands and major St. Louis events. Cahokia RV Parque, Safari RV Park, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park accept phone and online reservations through their operator websites.
Horseshoe Lake State Park does not take individual campsite reservations. Sites are normally first-come, first-served with a self-registration pay station. Group camping is the exception and is booked through the Illinois DNR ExploreMoreIL system. Book private sites four to eight weeks ahead for summer weekends, and confirm rig-length limits at time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
The Roxana area is urban-adjacent camping, not a wilderness destination. Expect industrial neighbors, highway noise near the interstates, and quick access to grocery stores, fuel, and dump stations. Private parks generally offer 30 and 50 amp service, full water and sewer, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi, with a seasonal pool and playground at Cahokia RV Parque.
Horseshoe Lake State Park is primitive when open: pit toilets, water hydrants, a dump station, no showers, and no hookups. Sites include a table and fire ring.
Cell service is generally strong across the metro. Travelers should plan for humidity in summer, mosquitoes near the lake and river bottoms, and thunderstorm-ready setup. A short drive puts most sites within reach of both downtown St. Louis and the Metro East.
