Campgrounds and RV parks near Shannon, IL

Water recreation anchors most trips in the area. Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area centers on a 40-acre lake with fishing, a swim beach, and multi-use trails shared by hikers and equestrians. Timber Lake Resort adds lake swimming, a pool, and the Timber Lake Playhouse, a professional summer stock theatre within walking distance of the sites. Beyond the campgrounds, day trips reach Apple River Canyon State Park, the historic river town of Galena, and Mississippi Palisades State Park along the Mississippi. Lena KOA Holiday runs a scheduled recreation program in the warm months with wagon rides, themed weekends, and an off-leash dog area. Anglers can fish stocked ponds at Emerald Acres Campground II, and families often use Lake LaDonna Family Campground for swimming and casual lake activities.

The camping season in northwest Illinois runs roughly from mid-April into late October. Emerald Acres Campground II operates from May 1 through October 15, and Lena KOA Holiday typically opens in mid-April and closes in late October. Timber Lake Resort and Campground runs on a seasonal schedule as well, with warm-month RV and tent camping. At Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area, the RV campground is open year-round, but the shower building with flush toilets and the trailer dump station operate only from May 1 through November 1. The equestrian campground and trails are available from April 15 to November 15, weather permitting, and the on-site concession runs from May 1 through mid-September. Summer weekends fill quickly, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Shoulder months of May, September, and early October bring cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and better site availability. Winter camping is possible at Le-Aqua-Na but expect closed water systems and snow on the ground.

Roads in Carroll and Stephenson counties are mostly two-lane rural highways with rolling grades. Approaches to Lake Le-Aqua-Na include hills and some sites may not be perfectly level, so travelers with longer rigs should plan for leveling blocks and slow entry. Amenities vary by park type. State park sites lean rustic, with electric hookups at many sites, water hydrants throughout the loops, and vault or flush toilets depending on the loop and season. Private parks like Timber Lake and Lena KOA offer full hookups, camp stores, playgrounds, and scheduled activities. Emerald Acres has beach swimming, a restaurant, and stocked fishing. Cell coverage is generally usable near towns and highways but can be spotty deeper in the campgrounds. Grocery runs are easiest in Lena, Freeport, or Mount Carroll. Firewood is typically sold on-site to help limit the spread of invasive pests.
