Campgrounds and RV parks near Shawneetown, IL

Outdoor activity in the Shawneetown area centers on the Shawnee National Forest. Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, a short drive west, offers sandstone bluff overlooks and the Observation Trail. Cave-in-Rock State Park draws visitors to its 55-foot-wide river cave, with a two-mile loop trail connecting the campground to the lodge and the cave itself. The Ohio River provides fishing and boating access, and the free Cave-in-Rock Ferry crosses into Kentucky. Horseback riders use the extensive marked trail network out of Double M Campground, which borders the national forest and has trailheads leaving directly from camp. Anglers and paddlers also head to nearby lakes and river access points, and the Old Shawneetown historic bank building draws travelers interested in Illinois river-town history.

The Shawneetown camping season is effectively year-round, though most RV travel concentrates from April through October. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and the highest rainfall of the year, with May typically the wettest month based on long-term normals for the Shawneetown station. Low-lying campgrounds along the Ohio and Wabash rivers, including sites at Harmonie State Park's floodplain loops, can be affected by high water in wet springs, so checking conditions before arrival matters. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging near 88°F and overnight lows around 70°F. Biting insects and ticks are common in the wooded state parks, and shaded sites fill first. Fall offers the most comfortable conditions, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color peaking through October. Winter camping is possible at year-round operators such as Double M Campground and Cave-in-Rock State Park, though snow and freezing rain occur several times each winter and some water systems may be shut off.

Expect a mix of state-park loops and small private campgrounds rather than large commercial resorts. Cave-in-Rock State Park offers 34 Class A sites with electric hookups plus 25 tent sites, a shower building, flush toilets, and a dump station. Harmonie State Park has around 200 sites, most electric-only, with shared water spigots around each loop and a limited number of full-hookup sites. Double M Campground provides electric and water hookups, pull-through RV pads, a dump station, and a heated and air-conditioned shower house, along with an on-site restaurant open weekends and holidays from March through November. Cell coverage is patchy in the hills, potable water and firewood can be scarce outside campgrounds, and campers should arrive with fuel and groceries already stocked.
