The camping season around South Roxana runs from spring through fall, shaped by a continental climate with cold winters and hot, humid summers. Horseshoe Lake State Park's campground is open from May 1 to September 30, with campers allowed a maximum of 7 days in a 30-day period. Commercial parks such as the KOA, Cahokia RV Parque, Safari RV Park, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park generally operate year-round, though pool and outdoor amenities are seasonal: the KOA pool runs from Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Spring brings the heaviest rainfall and active thunderstorms, with frequent severe weather days. Summer is hot and muggy with frequent afternoon storms. Fall is a pleasant season as temperatures cool from the intense summer heat, with daily highs sliding from around 80°F in September toward the mid-40s by December, making it the most settled stretch for RV travel. Winter sees occasional snow and freezing nights, and unhooked water service is common at parks that stay open. Check current alerts before booking: the Horseshoe Lake campground, the road leading to the campground, picnic shelter #3, and the hiking trail are closed due to an installation project on the causeway.

Expect an urban-edge RV experience rather than a wilderness one. The KOA, Cahokia RV Parque, Safari RV Park, and DraftKings at Casino Queen RV Park offer paved or gravel pads, full hookups, and easy interstate access, with sites that can feel close together at the in-town properties. Cahokia RV Parque offers full-hookup RV sites with 30/50 amp service, water, and sewer, on gravel surfaces with concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire pits, plus the on-site Sawmill BBQ restaurant. On-the-ground campfires are not allowed at the KOA due to county ordinances, so plan on raised fire rings or propane. Horseshoe Lake State Park accommodates 26 tent or trailer sites with a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants, but no hookups or showers. Cell coverage is strong across the area, and big-box shopping and groceries are minutes away.
