Camping near Thomson, Illinois

The town is best known as home to the Thomson Causeway Recreation Area on the river, and it sits within a short drive of several state parks and private RV resorts. The surrounding region is defined by limestone bluffs, backwater sloughs, and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
Most RV renters use Thomson as a base for river recreation and for exploring Mississippi Palisades State Park, located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple Rivers in northwestern Illinois, a short drive north through Savanna. Private resorts in the area cater specifically to RV travelers with full hookups and cabins.
Campground options range from riverfront state park sites to full-service private resorts. Spring Lake Campground and Seven Eagles Resort and Campground sit closest to Thomson, with Mississippi Palisades State Park, Timber Lake Resort and Campground, and Prophetstown State Park within an easy drive for day trips or overnight stays.
Things to do around Thomson
Hiking, fishing, and river recreation anchor most trips. Mississippi Palisades State Park features a rugged 15-mile trail system, and strenuous hikes lead past impressive rock formations, including Twin Sisters and Indian Head. Within the park's more than 2,500 acres, visitors find forests, river shorelines, valleys, caves, sinkholes, and palisades along the Mississippi River.
Cyclists can pick up the Great River Trail, which runs along the Mississippi through Savanna and continues south toward the Quad Cities. The Great River Bike Trail runs right through Spring Lake Campground, offering a scenic ride to nearby Savanna.
Anglers fish the Mississippi backwaters and the Rock River farther south at Prophetstown State Park. Timber Lake Resort and Campground adds a private lake, pool, and on-site activities, including a large pool, general store, lakeside deck, two spring-fed lakes, and biking and hiking trails.

The primary camping season runs from spring through late fall. Timber Lake Resort and Campground is open from April 15 to November 1, and Illinois state park campgrounds follow a similar seasonal pattern. At Mississippi Palisades, showers and flush toilets are in operation from May 1 until October 31, so shoulder-season visitors should plan for reduced facilities.
Summer weekends draw the largest crowds, particularly around holidays. Sites at popular state parks fill quickly, and private resorts often sell out on summer weekends. Fall is a strong pick for foliage and cooler nights, with fall foliage hikes recommended in early to mid-October at the Palisades bluffs.
Spring brings migratory birds along the river corridor. Eagles, pileated woodpeckers, and hundreds of other birds migrate along the river and can be spotted from park overlooks. Winter camping is limited at state parks, and most private resorts close, though rental cabins are available year round while the campground is open seasonally at some operators.
How to book near Thomson
Illinois state park campsites are reserved through the state system. Reservations may be made through the ExploreMoreIL website for Mississippi Palisades, and the same portal handles Prophetstown State Park. Reservations can be made as far as six months before a visit, or as close as three days before arrival. First-come sites also exist at both parks, but relying on them during summer weekends is risky.
Private resorts book directly. Timber Lake Resort takes reservations by phone and through its website, and Seven Eagles Resort and Campground uses its own online booking. For holiday weekends, secure a site well in advance, as popular loops fill within days of the reservation window opening.
What to expect on site
Hookup availability varies widely. Timber Lake Resort offers spacious RV sites with full hookups for water, electric, and sewer, while state parks lean toward electric-only or non-electric sites. Mississippi Palisades contains 241 sites designated Class A or Class B, of which 110 have electric hookups. The campground also features water and two sanitary dump stations.
Cell service is inconsistent in the river valley and inside state park loops. Campers report very little to no cell service in the campground, with only a few spots near the entrance offering spotty service, so RV travelers should download offline maps before arrival. Showers and flush toilets at state parks are seasonal; private resorts run their bathhouses through the full open season. Expect mosquitoes near backwaters in early summer and pack layers for cool river-bottom nights. Quiet hours are enforced at Illinois state parks, with admittance prohibited from 10 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. at Mississippi Palisades.
