Campgrounds near Timberlane
Timberlane is a small village in Boone County, Illinois, within the Rockford metropolitan area. It sits about ten minutes east of Rockford and puts RV travelers within easy reach of the region's largest state-park campground plus several private RV resorts along the I-90 corridor.
The headline public option is Rock Cut State Park, just west of Timberlane. The park covers more than 3,000 acres of rolling woodland and includes two lakes, Pierce Lake and Olson Lake, along with a large campground managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Rock Cut has both a main campground and a separate horse camp for equestrian users.
Private RV parks fill in the shoulders. Holiday Acres Camping Resort in Garden Prairie is a family-oriented resort with hundreds of sites along the Kishwaukee River, while Pine Country RV and Camping Resort in Belvidere operates as part of the Thousand Trails network. NorthWoods RV Resort rounds out the nearby options for travelers who want a longer stay or resort-style amenities.
Things to do near Timberlane
Most activity centers on Rock Cut State Park. The park has an extensive trail network for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, along with two lakes for fishing, paddling, and swimming. Pierce Lake allows boats, with engines above 10 horsepower restricted to no-wake speed, and Olson Lake has the designated swimming beach.
Rentals for canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, and paddleboards are available in summer, and skis and snowshoes can be rented in winter. Fishing targets include bluegill, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and muskie.
Off-park, Rockford offers museums, a zoo, riverfront trails, and family-friendly attractions, and the Boone County Fair in Belvidere is a summer draw a short drive from Pine Country RV and Camping Resort and Holiday Acres Camping Resort.

Northern Illinois has four distinct seasons. Summer is the busiest camping window, with warm days, frequent thunderstorms, and full amenities at both state and private parks. Weekends and holidays fill quickly at Rock Cut State Park and the private resorts, so bookings should be locked in weeks ahead.
Spring and fall are quieter but variable. Spring brings green-up along with wet ground and cool nights, while fall delivers hardwood color across the park's oak and maple stands. Private resorts along the I-90 corridor generally run from mid-April to mid-October, with Pine Country RV and Camping Resort operating on that seasonal schedule and Holiday Acres Camping Resort on a similar window.
Winter shifts the experience. At Rock Cut State Park, only electricity is available from November through April, with no water or dump-station access, and campers use the park for ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Most private resorts close or reduce services outside the main season.

How to book campgrounds near Timberlane
Rock Cut State Park uses the state's ExploreMoreIL reservation system, which replaced in-person park-office bookings. Reservations open six months in advance and must be made at least three days before arrival, and all campers need a permit. The equestrian sites at Horse Camp - Rock Cut State Park are available on a first-come basis rather than through the online system.
Private resorts run their own booking pipelines. Holiday Acres Camping Resort and NorthWoods RV Resort take direct reservations for nightly, weekly, and seasonal stays. Pine Country RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property, so members book through the Thousand Trails portal while non-members can also book directly when sites are open.
For peak summer weekends, book as early as possible; cancellation-alert services are commonly used for sold-out Rock Cut dates.
What to expect on the ground
Rock Cut State Park has a large campground with a mix of Class A electric sites and Class B non-electric sites, plus a rustic cabin and shelters. A camp store near the Plum Grove area sells ice, firewood, snacks, and basic groceries. Firewood must be purchased on-site and cannot leave the park due to emerald ash borer quarantine rules.
Private resorts are more amenity-heavy. Holiday Acres Camping Resort features a swimming pool, mini golf, disc golf, a jump pad, kayaking on the Kishwaukee River, an arcade, and an on-site restaurant and bar. Pine Country RV and Camping Resort offers electric and water hookups, a swimming pool, and pet-friendly sites, with pull-through options for larger rigs.
Expect level sites, tall hardwoods, and a family-heavy crowd across the area.
