Campgrounds and RV parks near Tiskilwa, IL

The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is the main draw. Its towpath runs about 104 miles across northwest Illinois with a relatively level surface suitable for road, hybrid, and mountain bikes, and the corridor includes fishing spots, boat launches, and historic canal locks and aqueducts. Boating is limited to 10 horsepower on most sections, with unlimited horsepower allowed between bridge 37 and Lock 24. Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area adds a 58-acre lake with boat rentals and trails through prairie, pine plantations, and bottomland hardwoods. The park is also home to Ryan's Round Barn, which offers guided tours on the first and third Saturdays of the month from May through September. Condit's Ranch adds swimming at a sandy beach, catch-and-release fishing on three ponds, playgrounds, and family activities on a 150-acre property.

The camping season in this part of Illinois runs primarily from spring through fall. At Johnson-Sauk Trail State Recreation Area, full services including showers, dump station, and potable water operate May 1 through November 1, and ExploreMoreIL reservations for the Chief Keokuk Campground, cabin, and Black Hawk group camp are available May 1 through October 31. The campground stays open in winter for dry camping with no water available, and Chief Tecumseh Cabin, a primitive heated cabin sleeping six, is available year-round. Along the Hennepin Canal, primitive Class C sites at locations like Lock 6 and Lock 22 are open on a first-come, first-served basis, though drinking water is scarce along the canal and limited to a few designated locations. Hickory Grove Campground AND RV Park operates roughly April through October, and Condit's Ranch typically runs late April through mid-October. Summer brings the highest demand and warmest weather. Fall offers cooler nights and color in the hardwoods; winter camping is possible at some sites but dry, cold, and best suited to experienced cold-weather RVers.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, farmland views, and quiet nights. Sites along the Hennepin Canal are primitive: no hookups, vault toilets at most locks, and no dump stations along the canal. Class C canal sites are walk-in from parking areas rather than drive-up, so canal camping suits tent campers, cyclists, and small rigs prepared for basic conditions. For RV renters who want hookups, Hickory Grove Campground AND RV Park offers 30/50-amp full-hookup sites and can accommodate rigs up to 80 feet. Johnson-Sauk Trail's Chief Keokuk Campground has 70 electric pads plus non-electric tent sites, a shower building, and a seasonal dump station. Cell coverage is generally adequate on main roads but can drop in wooded canal sections. Bring drinking water, bug spray, and firewood.
