Campgrounds and RV parks near Trout Valley, IL

Trout Valley is a small village in McHenry County along the Fox River, roughly an hour northwest of Chicago. RV travelers use it as a base for the Chain O' Lakes region, Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes, which sits a short drive east and north of the village. Campgrounds in the area split into two types. Private resorts like Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in Volo and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park offer full hookups, beaches, and family programming. Public options are anchored by Chain O' Lakes State Park, which includes the Turner Lake South campground, plus Fox River Recreation closer to the river corridor. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday sits farther south and works well for travelers combining an RV trip with day visits to the city. Most sites in the area accommodate mid to large rigs, and reservations are handled through a mix of state and private systems. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with shoulder-season openings in May and September.

State-park reservations for Chain O' Lakes, including Turner Lake South, go through the ExploreMoreIL system or by calling 866-716-6550. Reservations can be made up to six months and at least three days in advance, and the reservation fee is $5. Campsites can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period.
