Campgrounds and RV parks near Ursa, IL

Water-based recreation anchors most trips. The clear water of Wakonda State Park's six lakes attracts thousands of migratory waterfowl each year, and the lakes offer anglers a chance to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish, with two of the lakes having boat ramps. The park features the state park system's largest natural sand swimming beach along Wakonda Lake, plus trails and picnicking, which makes it a strong pick for families based at Wakonda Lake - Wakonda State Park. Mountain biking is permitted on the Agate Lake Trail and Sand Prairie Trail, with additional short rides along the paved Campground Trail that links to Jasper and Agate lakes. Across the river, Quincy offers riverfront parks, a historic downtown, and grocery resupply, and short drives reach the Great River National Wildlife Refuge and Mississippi River overlooks for wildlife viewing and photography.

The camping shoulder in this stretch of the Mississippi Valley runs April into October. Missouri State Parks operates an on-season from April 15 through October 31 and an off-season from November 1 through April 14, and Illinois riverside parks follow a similar rhythm. Late spring can bring heavy rain and localized river flooding, so check gauge levels before booking low-lying river sites. Summer is peak season. Weekends at Wakonda Lake - Wakonda State Park fill quickly, and shade is limited at many riverfront pads, so plan for heat and humidity. The park is renowned for its migratory waterfowl viewing, particularly Canada geese, snow geese, mallards, and herons, with Agate and Jasper lakes closed to boating during peak migration windows to protect waterfowl habitat, which makes fall and early spring rewarding for birders. Winter camping is limited. Wakonda Lake Campground stays open year-round with reservations available 12 months in advance through the Missouri State Parks system, but water service and comfort stations are typically reduced once freezing weather sets in.

Sites range from basic gravel pads at small private parks to full-hookup concrete pads at the state park. Wakonda State Park offers basic, electric, sewer/electric/water, and walk-in basic campsites, and facilities include showers, water and laundry, plus a dump station. Big-rig drivers should note that tree cover is thin on the newer Wakonda Lake loop, so a canopy or awning helps in mid-summer. Camping is limited to any 15 days within a 30-consecutive-day period at any one park or historic site in the Missouri system. Pets must be supervised and kept on leashes no longer than 10 feet at all times, and portable fences, shock collars and other electronic devices do not meet these requirements. Cell coverage is generally usable along the river corridor but can drop in wooded draws.
