The main camping season in central Illinois runs from spring through fall. Illinois state park campgrounds, including Sangchris Lake, accept reservations for the April 1 through October 31 season, which lines up with the practical shoulder-to-shoulder RV window. Late April through May brings wildflowers and mild days, along with the region's wettest months and occasional severe thunderstorms. Summer is peak season. June through August is warm and humid, with the Illinois State Fair pulling heavy traffic into Springfield in August. Book state park sites well ahead for summer weekends and around the fair. Fall is often the best RV window: cooler nights, lower humidity, and strong color through October. Winter camping is limited. At Sangchris Lake, Deer Run closes from the second week of January through March 31, water and shower facilities shut off from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31, and Hickory Point remains open year-round.
