Campgrounds and RV parks near Wood River, IL

The Wood River area combines outdoor recreation with cultural sites tied to the Lewis and Clark expedition, which departed from nearby Camp River Dubois. Cyclists and walkers can access the Madison County Trails network, which links to roughly 85 miles of bike trail through Madison County and continues across the Chain of Rocks Bridge toward downtown St. Louis. Anglers and paddlers use the region's oxbow lakes and river backwaters, while day trips north on the Great River Road reach Pere Marquette State Park and the bluffs above Grafton. To the south, families can visit the Gateway Arch, the St. Louis Zoo, the City Museum, and Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site, all within roughly thirty minutes of most area RV parks.

The camping season in the Wood River area is shaped by the Mississippi floodplain climate and by state park operating windows. Under normal conditions, the Horseshoe Lake State Park campground operates from May 1 to September 30, with a maximum stay of 7 days in a 30-day period and no reservations for camping. The campground is presently closed for causeway work, so travelers should verify status with Illinois DNR before relying on it. Private RV parks in the metro area generally operate year round, though some limit services in the coldest months. Spring brings the highest rainfall and the greatest flood risk along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, which occasionally affects bottomland access roads and low-lying campgrounds. Summer is warm, humid, and prone to afternoon thunderstorms, and it is also the busiest booking window, especially around Cardinals home stands and holiday weekends. Fall is typically the most stable season for RV travel, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and steady river levels. Winter camping is possible at commercial parks, but many state park facilities are closed, and hard freezes can affect water service at some private sites.

Amenities vary widely between the commercial and state park options. Private parks near the interstate typically provide full hookups, dump stations, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi, and most accept larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs with pull-through sites. State park camping in this area is more basic. Horseshoe Lake State Park accommodates 26 tent or trailer campsites, with a sanitary dump station, pit toilets, and water hydrants on site, and no showers or electrical hookups are provided. Travelers should arrive with full fresh-water tanks and charged batteries when it reopens. Expect mosquitoes and other biting insects near the lake and river bottoms from late spring through early fall, and plan for humid summer nights. Highway noise is noticeable at some interstate-adjacent parks, so travelers wanting quieter surroundings should compare loop locations before booking.
