Campgrounds and RV parks near Ashley, IN

Water dominates the itinerary. Lake James and Snow Lake, which frame Pokagon State Park, offer boating, swimming, fishing, and scenic sunsets, and Hogback Lake at the KOA supports fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, perch, and bullhead. Pontoon, canoe, and kayak rentals are available from the KOA marina, and swim beaches are easy to line up on either lake. On dry land, Pokagon has miles of hiking trails, a nature center, a saddle barn with guided horseback rides, and paved bike paths. The quarter-mile refrigerated toboggan run has a top recorded speed of 42 mph and operates weekends from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February, with extended hours during the Christmas holidays. Off-park stops include the Steuben County outlet mall, the Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve, and, further west, the Amish town of Shipshewana for markets and crafts. Buck Lake Ranch stages country, rock, and bluegrass shows through the warm months.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends at Pokagon and the KOA fill early, and holiday weekends at Indiana State Parks require a three-night minimum. If the holiday falls on a Friday the required stay is Thursday through Saturday, and if the holiday falls on a Monday the required stay is Friday through Sunday. Book eight to twelve weeks out for July and August. Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV renters. Regular rates and full services at Pokagon resume mid-March to late April depending on weather, and full services are available May through October. Fall brings hardwood color across the moraines and easier reservations after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited but real. When temperatures fall in November the campgrounds switch to winter rates and services, and Campground 3 at Pokagon stays open all winter with one heated comfort station and a water fill station. Angola / Hogback Lake KOA Holiday is the only campground in the area open year-round, while many other private parks close or reduce to seasonal-only sites from late October through April.

Sites in this area are typically level gravel or grass with electric hookups; water, sewer, and 50-amp availability vary by park and loop. Indiana State Parks charge a one-time entrance fee on top of the camping fee, and maximum length of stay is 14 consecutive nights. Most state-park loops have modern restrooms, hot showers, and a dump station. Private resorts around Angola trend family-oriented. Expect pools, camp stores, planned weekend activities, and, at the KOA, private beach access, a lazy river, a marina, and pontoon, kayak, and canoe rentals. Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-69 corridor. Fires may be built only in the fire rings provided, collecting firewood in state parks is prohibited, and firewood is sold at the park concession or campground store. Blue-green algae can appear on area lakes; check bulletin boards before swimming.
